It's changing, Dustin.
ND isn't ever the lead story anymore when it comes to college football. The rise of programs like Florida and LSU and the re-rising of Southern Cal...who market wise is a pretty giant heavyweight...to challenge teams like Michigan, Ohio State, Texas, etc means more teams are getting major exposure...the kind they weren't 20 years ago when ND was relevent more often.
Losing is a death knell to any team or program, no matter how popular you think they might be. Would the NBA have been happier if the Celtics hadn't been gawd awful for nearly a decade? Maybe, but was it backbreaking? Nope. If ND doesn't win, what is already becomming a dwindling fan base will just get weaker. And many kids will trade immediate success over stories of Rudy, gold helmets, and the Gipper. Nowadays, with college football routinely on 4-5 stations around the country every Saturday for a solid 8 some hours, every major program gets national TV time almost every single week. ND isn't alone in that anymore.
Aside from maybe a game against Western Kentucky or some form of D-2 Carolina, I'm pretty sure I caught @ least part of every single Florida game last season. As well as about 4-7 other teams.
