No matter what team you like this story was truely amazing to watch. He was a good pitcher and then all of a sudden the meltdown happened, he never did recover from that, well in pitching anyway.

Think about it though most peoplewould have buried themsevles in a corner and we would have never heard from them again. They would have been depressed and on all sorts of medication and most likely we would have found them in some homeless shelter 10 years later after they blew all the cash they made over the career.

But Rick was different, he went down to single A ball and tried to become an outfielder because he knew he could hit the long ball and that the chicks loved it.....then steriods, or HGH I forget which one the report said he was on, again this nearly destroyed every other's position players careers but Rick once again as made it through the rain and appears he will have a nice career in the outfield playing in the New Bush Stadium.... I am not sure if it is a feel good story because of the Roids, but he is a guy who seems to work hard to improve his game and skills.

indeed-- onthe HGH though, im sure that was for healing the arm , not getting a leg up on the competition.
im fortunate enough to get to see him play all the time in person from my left-center bleacher seats.  impressive.

go cards

This is indeed an outstnading story.  It goes to show kids that if you stick with something and take enough HGH/steriods... you too can compete on the higest level.  Well done, Ricky.  You're a role model to all!

I remember being amazed and excited for the next big pitching prospect for the Cardinals...he was outright dominant at parts of his rookie season...it is nice to see that he did recover his pitching...what a remarkable turnaround and as a diehard Cardinals fan, it is great to see him not only contributing, but becoming a star...pure class

I saw the game against the Braves when he self-destructed. I honestly thought there was no way that he was ever going to be back in the big leagues unless he was just a bench player or he was traded somewhere else to be a middle relief pitcher. What an amazing story of courage and also of believing in oneself to make it all the way back.

I kind of hope they make a movie out of this.

Sad to see dumb ass ppl making comments about HGH with this guy.

Regardless, he still has to hit the ball and he still has to make the plays in the field...

To go from being a big league pitcher to center fielder and above avg hitter in 2-3 years shows what kind of talent this guy has.

It also shows that the StLouis brass knew what they were doing when they got rid of Edmonds (now a complete bum) and Rolen.

StLouis has got some young guys around Pujols now and this team is playing pretty good....

Just imagine when they get back Carpenter.....fun, real fun.

I'm so sick of hearing people say "HGH/Steroids" like they are the same thing. Steroids cause an immediate and identifiable increase in muscle density and strength. Studies have shown that HGH does NOT cause an increase in strength when used alone, only an increased aptitude for healing. HGH can be used to increase strength, when combined with steroids. It amplifies the effects of the testosterone.

lol rdubya is just ignorant so i wouldnt pay any attention to it.  aside from the fact HGH wasn't illegal then, and all that good stuff, HGH is human growth hormone.  lol the man used it in 2004 under a doctors perscription to help rebuild his arm.   he used it once 4 years ago to recover from injury, so well done rdubya for trying to rain on a feel good story.  it might actually carry some weight were it not for your glaring ignorance...
