LOL, it is good debate, but I keep waiting for some moron like Banned Sleepy or BennyRotten to drop in and start spewing their garbage posts. At any rate, I tend to agree with Slaton that Dickrod did get some things accomplished here, it's just oo bad that he was too stupid to salvage his own reputation by departing decently.  The man will never be able to return to WV without looking over his shoulder and people remembering what a swine he showed himself to be.  I really wonder how positive an influence RR is on anyone other than to put fear into them.  That works for a while but tends to bring out the worst in people when the going gets tough.  I think Coach Stew has the right approach with handling 17-20 year old kids, you gotta love 'em but be tough on 'em.  We'll know in short time if Stew really is like this or if this is a lot of talk.  I happen to think the man is genuine, but then again....we've been burned before.... so I approach the situation with Jason with extreme caution.

Slaton,

I agree with you on one aspect of your arguments...Timing...With all of the scrutiny the University is undre right now with the Bresch scandal, it may not be the best time for us to let a kid with questionable academic records back into WVU.

Having said that, I agree with Lambert that the greater risk here would be if Stew was giving a chance to Collington, Holmes, or the other guy(I can't remember his name right now) Those were major legal offenses. This is a kid that wasn't mature enough to understand what it meant to be a true "Student Athlete" Coach Stew is giving this kid an opportunity to prove that he has that maturity and understanding now. If he proves that he does, he can play ball. If he doesn't, he can't.

As for what RR did with students academically and the progress he made in getting things for the facilities. I agree that he was very interested in that and did a good job pushing for those things. It will help us in the long run, bit with assisting in educating our student athletes and with recruiting.

Gwaltney should be made to do the same.  Go to Fairmont, West Liberty, etc and show that he can make the grades.  He should do this while paying for this, just as any other non-scholored student would do.  Once he makes the grades to transfer, through the proper means, back to WVU, then let him back at WVU.  I think he should be admitted back to the sports program, on a partial scholorship until he proves that he merits another chance at a free ride.  This will be determined by his grades, attitude, and actions.  Each decision on a student-athlete would be a case by case one.

I may be wrong here but I have not seen any where that Gwaltney is going to be placed back on scholarship.  In fact it says exactly what you have pointed out...Gwaltney will have to prove himself academically even to qualify at WVU then prove himself to want to play by playing on the practice squad and scout team.

Each case on a student athlete should be a case by case one and Stew sets an example here.  Any athlete who is not trouble off the field should have another chance to prove himself academically if somewhere along the line he falls into trouble.  If Stew doenst follow this precedent set by Gwaltney then he falls into being hypocritical.

I truly do not know the inner workings of  the 'Hows" of getting the kids to class...but as far as RR goes...one of his big things was gettign a new Education Center for all athletes..the graduation and GPA of the program as whole is pretty good..We can bash RR about alot of things..but the guy did some great things...RR did some great things while at WVU not doubt and the out line and set up for the Education Center was one.  The graduation and GPA of the program was pretty good and with that being said.......it lends to the fact that he should of been and had to be aware of the problem of Gwaltney attending class long before it should have become a problem.   At the time Gwaltney arrived on campus he was the highest profile athlete to go under scholarship under RR.  I think it is funny that Gwaltneys problem in the class room emerged at the same time of the sucess of White and Slaton.  Gwaltney seemed like an after thought after these two started putting on the greatest show on turf.  Would have the focus on Gwaltneys academic issues been greater if WVU did not have these two super stars lighting up the scoreboard each week.  Would he have gotten the help needed to attend class and get straightened out?

thanks slaton,

you're right about RR getting kids to class and the academic facilities.  i'm not claiming to be an expert, or even well informed!

i based my statement on some things Pat White said about how the coaches taught and motivated under Stewart.  He said something to the effect that there is a lot less yelling and cussing.  He said they taught you when you made a mistake, instead of embarrassing the players.

the new atmosphere in the program (that P White alluded to) might be what a guy like Gwaltney needs.  who knows, and if he fails this time shame on him.
I agree he's getting special treatment, but i don't have a problem with ball players getting some breaks.

Guess I should have read the article first.

Good point LL.  Imagine intrusting your child to RR.  I don't know what was said, but I'm sure it contained promises of insuring that "your child goes to class, will graduate, and upon graduation - he will be a productive member of society.  YOU HAVE MY WORD ON IT".  Having said that gave me the chills, but Gwaltney and his parents have share some of the blame also.  My father gave me two choices - (1) go to school or (2) shovel sh*t in Louisiana.

Slaton10, I tend to agree with you that Gwaltney has probably had enough 2nd chances already.  The only reason he is getting another chance is because we came up very SMALL in recruiting RB's this last year and that is it.  That being said I would love to get a 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc., etc. chance with your AVATAR.

 LMAO

Hmmmm...I am no tso sure about that...see Maryland Highlights...I think he was coming into his own an dhurt his knee and I think maybe that mentally set him back as well..knowing his year was most likely done..

Honestly....I don't get this absurd post at all...
