To everyone who thinks its a non-issue, its hard to play for a college that you can't get into, so if his grades were changed to keep him eligable for entrance into KU, that is kind of a big deal.

Are you sure it's a disgruntled employee? Yeah, I'm sure.  Possibly for good reason, he's upset about the transfer to teaching driver ed in a different school.  Calling him disgruntled doesn't mean I think he's right or wrong.  I don't know when the transfer was made, whether it was vindictive or justified, but his retaliation through a sympathetic media source does violate the student's right to confidentiality of records.  Perhaps he tried administrative remedies and failed.
Could it be the teacher was still seeing it ocurring, regardless of which school it ocurred, and felt that it is time to stop it.Yeah, it could be.  More likely, imo, he's after revenge on the coach, principal, school, district he believes gave him the shaft.  He himself describes Darrell as a victim, not a perpetrator, yet chooses to throw under the bus both the victim and any subsequent associates of the victim.
I know, with my lowly associates degree, that if it were about harming KU or getting press the teacher would have blown up the story in the F4.  Please don't apologize for your education (or take a swipe at other's) level.  You write far better than most, obviously think about consequences, and reflect credit on those who helped you along the way.
You are going to tell me as a former teacher that students didn't have an idea of what grade they were earning?  They (the students), let alone anyone who's grades are borderline passing/failing, know their academic standing. In general, I would agree.  In a specific case, we neither of us can know.  With assurances from mentors that, "It's okay, we'll fix it," it would be a rare case in which the 15-year old says, "I'll be late to practice, getting help with math."  Even rarer to hear, "Sorry, I can't play.  I'm flunking Algebra."

This, if it is true, means he enrolled fraudulently.

Legally fraudulent, or merely short of your impeccable standard of honesty?  With a diploma awarded, satisfactory test scores, clearinghouse approval, that's a hard case to make.

And your reply is.....?

Interrupted at this point until I get back from hernia surgery.  May be after the hip replacement when you hear more.  Sitting this long aggravates sciatica which could generate vehemence comparable to what dolphinollie provoked last knight.  I do want to get into college's role/responsibility.

mksmith17,

I love it when people run their mouth without having a clue as to what they are talking about.

His grades were changed to keep him eligible in HIGH SCHOOL.  Not to keep him eligible for entrance into KU.  it was to keep him eligible to play in HIGH SCHOOL.

Exactly how does changing his grades when he was a sophmore, not being recruited by Kansas, have anything to do with getting him entrance into KU?

Dumb.

I could see this being a 100% non-factor. Yes, Colleges have academic standards and whatnot, but I wonder if GPA is just a starting point? Wouldn't surprise me if they place a lot more emphasis on:

  • Who your parents are
  • What school you attended
  • Standardized tests - SAT & ACT
  • Their enrollment tests
  • AP tests
  • Extra-curricular activities (basketball in this case)

Case in point, when I transferred from St. Andrew's College (Toronto) to Edina (Minnesota), as a Junior, they fubared my GPA. They don't grade on the same scales, at all. An A in Edina is 90%, at St. Andrew's is 80%, but they don't curve stuff the same way, to get 80% at SAC is a heck of a lot harder.

I got the two schools to try figure out how to translate all of this nonsense but it was still balderdash, in the end. Despite being on the Dean's List at Indiana and testing into a bunch of free credits, I had one of the lowest class rankings at Edina (and my GPA was over 3.5 for two years there).

Indiana didn't care about the translation problem, they don't trust yankees anyways. I explained the situation to them and they said "Come on down."

KU62,

this is not related to Arthur at KU

Erm... Yes, it is. Who else would it be related to?

In any case, big deal or not, can you do us a favour and stop holding back on us? I want to know how you really feel and your posts to this thread are far too subtle to demonstrate just how insane this issue has really made you.

Let's have it man, full-on name calling and extreme vitriol. I mean, how dare anyone say anything about a news story about KU, whether it holds water or not?

this is not related to Arthur at KUErm... Yes, it is. Who else would it be related to?It could better be stated as, "... not related to Arthur while at KU.''

Nate0,
Thanks for the understanding ear to my Friday evening rant.   My first impulsive reaction was "How dare anyone defile the crimson and blue!"
I'm sure your sympathetic response drew on your own months in the trenches defending crimson and cream last winter.  Now we both await NCAA deliberations of how they can escape with their own underwear unsoiled.
At least your season-long distractions are past, while ours are likely to mount in the months ahead.

I don't see how KU is going to be in any trouble for this. High school grades are notoriously subject, my freshman and sophmore years grades were the result of an international negotiation of sorts, and they still didn't get it right.

Even students from the NCAA's recently published Prep School blacklist:

http://www2.ncaa.org/portal/media_and_events/press_room/2006/july/20060705_list_of_high_schools.html

Were allowed to remain with their University, they were grandfathered in, no punishment was dealt to any of the Universities with students from those schools. These are schools that were deemed ineligible due to notorius bs grade-inflation. This is a much bigger problem than what we're talking about:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/07/

Indiana, unlike KU, is still in some serious hot water. While I've bounced back from Rock Bottom, the NCAA is going punish IU, I just can't figure out how much. And whatever they do, probably won't shock me too much. The distraction's not quite over yet, while the shock value of it all has come and gone.
