Ok folks I read on another thread that things seem to be slowing down a bit on the board and tried to think of something to get things going again.
Soooo in your opinion what do you consider to be WVU's most historical win and sort of marks the turn of WVU football in becomming a team to be reckoned with. I am listing a few of the teams WVU has wins over, not researching the scores or I would be forever checking the past stats. So lets get something going here and perhaps come up with what we would consider as the NUMBER 1 overall football win in WVU history. In addition if you wish we could even go further and list the top 5 or top 10 wins in order (1 of course being the best ever). If we can it would sort of be nice to know the year and the final score also.
WVU owns wins over the teams I have listed in the poll and of course other teams I did not list. Lets hear your opinion.
Have fun with it. Have a great day today and a better one tomorrow everyone.

I just want to add that there are other teams that WVU has beaten that could/would qualify also, even current and past Big East teams. But I was limited to only 8 choices and once I started typeing in teams I noted I did not have a space for OTHER. So if you wish to choose other feel free to do so.

I don't think this particular game is the greatest game ever, though one of the best, but the 2005 Louisville 3OT comeback win was probably one of the biggest kick-starters for this program...look how far we have come since Pat White and Slaton took the helm...definitely a key "W" for the Mountaineers

I agree with Rivalschupa, I think Lousiville was critical. We lose that game, I don't think Pat White or Steve become starters, at least for a few more games. WVU probably loses another couple games that year without that momentum. No Sugar Bowl (and subsequent win over Georgia). And, recruiting would have suffered as a result. Let's say WVU lost that game against Louisville, lost the next week due to let down, goes 10-2 or 9-3, goes to the Gator Bowl, probably loses. We don't have recruits in the program like we do now. On that vein, I'd vote for beating Georgia on the poll, because, again, that win was a marquis win against a perceived more superior conference, it got WVU in the National Spotlight and got the attention of recruits.

Great points about the Louisville 2005 game, BUT that put us into position to play Georgia, which makes it an even bigger game. We do not win that game and all respect is lost (or never even gained). The Georgia game showed the country that we are a team to be reckoned with. Pre-season top 10's, recruits, etc...
The Sugar Bowl started it, the Fiesta Bowl solidified it.

All great choices and I think that the Louisville, Georgia, and Oklahoma win in the Fiesta Bowl were great....but I have to vote for Oklahoma in 1982.
WVU was not even a blip on the radar nationally until we won that game. It really laid the foundation for everything that we are today.
While the wins over the last 3 years are more significant to the here and now with recruiting and national respectability, the OU win in Norman was bigger for the history of the program...IMHO.

IMO, the win over UGA in the Sugar Bowl was the most historic. It was the first-ever win in a Major/BCS Bowl game in the history of WVU football. To add to its significance, it came at a time when BE football had hit rock-bottom. All of America felt the BE should lose its BCS status, and noone gave WVU a chance to win that game.
WVU had everything going against it. A redshirt freshman as its starting QB, a true freshman as its starting RB, and a weak schedule in which it had played two ranked teams all year in VT and UofL. They were going up against the SEC champs who were literally playing in their own backyard inside the Georgia Dome.
That game allowed the BE to keep its BCS status. It propelled us into top 10 status. And, it opened doors to recruits' homes which before were closed.

By the time we played Oklahoma in this past years Fiesta Bowl, WVU had already reached the level of one of the major forces in college football. However, if we had lost that game.....we would have suffered, in my opinion, a major setback that would have pushed us back many years. Our recruiting would have suffered even more than it did.....our morale would have been terribly shattered......and the entire nation would have been saying WVU could not succeed without our former coach. With the win....and the way we beat a very good team.......the entire nation saw the spirit and togetherness of what WVU football is all about. With that win, WE GOT BETTER as a team......our coaching staff became stronger......and our pride was shown throughout the nation. WVU football is bigger than any one person and NOW, the entire nation knows it.
