Groo was one of the few laugh out loud comics that I've ever read.  Probably hard to find now, but if you ever run across any collection of it, I highly recommend it.

Mornin, bluez, lt.  Rock, my parents threw all my old comics away just a couple of years ago.  They had a leak in the ceiling, and they all got wet.  The ones I had though, were the average run of the mill stuff like Spiderman, Superman, Batman, etc.

Mornin' to all. Thanks, Rock-- I listen to older music because apart from all the old rock supergroups there's no decent music anymore. The only song I have on my iPod younger than me is Slither, by Velvet Revolver.

John the Fisherman- Primus

Well... there's a contradiction for you! I exaggerated a little there, of course.

Rebel, I like those two, but in the mid- to late-80s I got into a lot of the independent comics that were coming out.  That was a great period of creativity and there some real classic produced during that time.  There were alo many worthy comics that fell through the cracks.  As with any period of growth, though, there was also a lot of crap that got published.  Some of my favorite comics from that era:

  • Groo The Wanderer
  • Fish Police
  • Usagi Yojimbo
  • The Badger
  • Nexus
  • Cerebus
  • The Trouble With Girls
  • ElfQuest
  • and many more...

A few of my favorites would have to be the vintage Spider-Man (the reboot sucks... sorry), Runaways, and Serenity (the Firefly comic spinoff).

A few of those sound familiar to me, rock.  I remember Groo and Fish Police.  We didn't have a whole lot of selection in small town Mississippi back when I was growing up.  It isn't like today where you can order anything online.  Dang, that makes me sound old.

LT, I agree that those old classic rock groups are great, but I disagree about there no being any good new music.  You may have to search, but it is out there.  Some great newer groups that would appeal to lovers of classic rock:

  • Drive-By Truckers
  • Deadstring Brothers
  • Lucero
  • Two Cow Garage
  • Cross Canadian Ragweed

Now Playing:

Joan Jett & The Blackhearts:  Bad Reputation

AMG Review:

Joan Jett's debut album is an infectious romp through her influences, ranging from classic '50s and '60s rock & roll through glam rock, three-chord loud'n'fast Ramones punk, and poppier new wave guitar rock. Half the songs on the original album (not counting bonus tracks on the remastered reissue) are covers, but whether it's Lesley Gore's feminist girl-group anthem "You Don't Own Me" (featuring the Sex Pistols' Steve Jones and Paul Cook) or a roaring version of Gary Glitter's "Do You Wanna Touch Me (Oh Yeah)," Jett makes them all work. The production can be a little weak in spots, but Jett's exuberance and tough-girl attitude overcome most deficiencies. Plus, the title track is a classic.
