Coach Howland is still not offering to either Renardo Sydney or Lance Stephenson. Both are 5* recruits and both are top recruits at their positions. However, Coach Howland is still evaluating both them whether or not they can fit to his system. If they were, I am sure Coach Howland already offered them just like he did to Reeves Nelson.

I know he has not offered which is strange. He has offered 4 star Greg Smith from Fresno and Sidney is much better. I am not sold on what I have seen from Nelson, he looks good but a five star he wont be by the time it is all over. Gooden is a stud, his drop is from his being hurt this year.

Reeves Nelson is only a 16 years old Junior and he's still growing on his 6'7" 215 lbs body. He's a top 10 player in the talent rich California who just recently named into All State team for CalHiSports.com. He's also named in Division IV All State team along with Modesto's Player of the Year. Reeves Nelson has plenty of room to improve on all facet of his basketball game. By the time he finished next season as a Senior, he's more than likely to be McDonald All American. Put it this way, we still need to recruit him even though he's verbally committed to us. Kentucky hasn't stopped recruiting him.

Renardo Sydney just finished playing at GBOA West tournament with his AAU team, L.A. Dream Team, at the Galen Center over the weekend. We're the last 2 choice prior this weekend and the other was the host, USC. We're still haven't offered him scholarship for 2009 season. Now, Kentucky is in the mix.
Are we going to make mistake if he signed with our crosstown? I have to believe his playing style does not conform to Coach Howland until to wait this long. We offered scholarship to lesser ranked Center/PF out of States but not to Renardo Sydney...

Sidney will not become a Bruin. It will come down to USC and Kentucky. UCLA hasn't offered because they cannot get through his filters - deeply involved father, AAU ties, street agent, etc.

With Alex Stephenson is transferring to us, losing Renardo Sydney won't be much as much as an impact.

Who is Alex Stephenson?
The Bruins seems to be falling behind in recruiting for 2009. It seems more players are looking at playing for Figueroa Tech in 2009 rather than coming to Westwood. It must be because of the deals sc players get at Circuit City.
Why did Jordan Hamilton, Solomon Hill and Hollis Thompson not even consider palying at UCLA? Other than Reeves Nelson who are the Brunis talking to? Any word on Greg Smith, Elijah Johnson, Nolan Dennis, Shawn Williams or Brendan Lane?

Who is Alex Stephenson?
He was #11 top Center in 2006 and we recruited him heavily. He's applying for NCAA exemption and if granted, he'll be able to play for 2008 season. He wanted to be "close to his family" due to the health of his father. Granted that he was a backup player while at North Carolina, but at least he has experience to help our front lines.
Simply put, Coach Howland's system didn't fit Hamilton, Hill, and Thompson's playing styles. Other than Smith and Lane, all these out of State players are leaning toward school close to home. We didn't offer Elijah Johnson yet, but things can change next season. Coach Howland was only able to recruit ONE player out of California during his 5 years here and it won't change much. He often mentioned to secure recruiting in our backyard first before looking for out of States. Greg Smith is leaning toward us and we're the top 5 schools but Coach Howland hasn't offered him. He did offer to Brendan Lane but he's leaning toward Arizona.
For 2009 recruiting, Coach Howland offer 5 out of States player and only one is leaning toward us, Avery Bradley (SG/PG) out of Tacoma, Washington.
