The thing about religion is people use it to mean whatever they want it to. The KKK thought they were doing God's work. The Crusaders thought they were doing God's work. Hitler thought he was doing God's work. Osama bin Laden thinks he's doing God's work
People take parts of the bible they like and conveniently forget others. Jesus loved everybody and the bible preached "turn the other cheek" to those who harm you, yet you'll see some moron outside a march with a bible in one hand and a "God hates [cigarette]s" sign in the other
I don't blame the people because they only know what was taught to them and if I was raised my entire life to believe people different than me were evil then I'd believe it too. The only difference between a cult and mainstream religion is the number of people following it

I'm not sure if you have kids, but I do...
bronc,
I have a daughter who is gay, and I assure you, she's quite normal. She's dated both men and women, and has made a conscious choice to be gay. The key word here is "choice", and it happens to be the foundation of this particular democracy. You, and like-minded individuals, are very dangerous indeed. Anyone who would attempt to dictate to others their personal lifestyle choices are not only wrong, but anti-American. In theory, our nation embraces diversity, the very premise of our constitution. Perhaps you could revisit American history to see why your archaic point of view contradicts reality.
Unfortunately, I'm out, because I'm dying to hear your response. I'm sure it would be tremendously enlightening.

I've been reading the posts from three (!) threads dedicated to this subject. It seems to be quite a volatile issue, which means we, as a species, obviously have a LOT if work to do before we can truly call ourselves a "civilized" species.
Lots of intelligence and understanding, on all three threads, and to counter that- a lot of misunderstanding, religious preaching and well, basic hatin'
I think it's fantastic California has taken a step towards true civility and understanding the basic rights of life and real freedom.
This country was founded on the principles of freedom to live one's life as they choose, freedom religion and the right to pursue happiness. That's what's happening with this recent decision.

There are two important rules in Christianity. (1) Don't judge. (2) Humans can't know God's plan. Yet, so-called Christians violate these endlessly by judging those who are different. Amazing.
I'd like to keep discussing, but I must go and drink. I might be more outspoken when I get back.

Alright, I decided to do some research for the folks who argue that the Supreme Court of California is undemocratic.
First, justices are all appointed by an elected official. And, in all but one case, that elected official was a Republican.
Second, all justices face a retention vote at the general election after they are appointed, and then every 12 years after that. That means that ALL OF THE JUSTICES have faced the voters of California (and all but two of them have faced the voters twice), and the voters approved them.
So, if you have a problem with these justices, blame the voters of California.

Wow. Great stuff by Araker, Josh, & livin_the_dream- "it's gold Jerry...gold!"
Somehow this is the most entertaining thread I have read in a long time; but at the same time, some of these posts just reflect how backward & ignorant some people still are...it's 2008 people. It makes me think that some of your distant relatives were also the ones who burned women for being witches and killed philosophers for saying that the world was round. A kid could get on the Internet, and in about 5 seconds, they could find stuff that is 10 million times more disturbing than a homosexual couple having relations".
Personally I think there are plenty of other things to worry about in this day and age. 78,000+ people have died in the Myanmar cyclone and the survivors can't even get foreign aid because of their government--and people in the US could care less b/c it is thousands of miles away. But homosexuals want to get married, and many Americans are horrified & outraged because they think it will result in the deterioration of the "American family"--newsflash...that boat sailed a while ago
