Oh please, how is this even an issue?

If they want to get married, let them.  Who is it hurting if they get married?  Nobody but those who are mentally unstable.

The Bong Show.....such very good points in your post of 5/16 at 7:04.....I despise prejudices - based on race, religion, sexual preference, etc......it just seems that since marriage has meant the male/female union for so many generations then another term  that would not perpetuate anything that lessens the love people choose to have for one another is needed for the other unions.....have no suggestions and hope someone does come up with a term that would please most cause it is of course impossible to please everyone and that fact ain't ever gonna change!

Maybe even if there is another term it would just be a matter of time till it is accepted as perfectly alright by those involved?

Hi Bradley.... really quickly here...

It is the principle of the matter more so than the naming convention.  If we got rid of the word marriage altogether and made them all civil unions, then the religious people would be upset because the simple root of the matter is that they don't want gays associated with their wives/husbands.

I could care less what people call it.   It is just a lame piece of paper IMHO.    That piece of paper doesn't mean that anyone loves someone more just because they have it over someone that doesn't have that same piece of paper.

If we need a PC naming convention, let's just call it courtroom marriage or church marriage.   Or civil union and religious union.    That's all it is in reality.

My issue is just with the priniciple of equality that gets thrown under the bus.    Sure, black people could drink from their fountains and got water and white people could do the same.   Everyone got water, but the principle of equality got shafted in the process.   Marriage has been the way it has been for years, but it doesn't make it right, just like the drinking fountains being separate wasn't right.

In any event, just my 2 cents.  Nice post!

Have a great weekend!

Cheers!

" This is black and white to me. If you can procreate with your mate then you can get married and enjoy all the benifits and hardships afforded such a union. If two gay people want to live together, I really don't have much say about it. I feel under no circumstances should gays be allowed to adopt. Should we normalize every abnormal behavior? "

-GB program man

How about sterile straights, should they be allowed into your narrow definition of marriage?

" Should we normalize every abnormal behavior" You guys have abnormalized this behavior. Who gave you the right to define normal and abnormal? Oh yeah....God, your imaginary buddy I forgot about him.

And since when does Christianity have some monopoly on marriage? Like other religions or cultures had never thought of it until the Bible was written.

If every gay person on the earth eloped last night to California and had a secret marriage ceremony your life wouldn't change one bit. It wouldn't undermine, or affect your marriage, or the institution of marriage at all.

You know I love ya, but I have to disagree.  There are lots of examples of things that have meant something for a long time only for time to later show that the old vision was too narrow.  How about the right to vote?  First, "voting" meant white men getting together and choosing their (actually, everyone's) leaders.  Then, "voting" was redefined to mean all men (at least theoretically) getting together to choose the leaders.  Now, "voting" is what all citizens do (or at least should do).

How about the phrase "All men are created equal"?  That's changed quite a bit.

Given that the State (meaning town, county, state, nation) provides benefits in the form of financial benefits (taxes) and other benefits to a segment of the population based on its status as being "married", then the State cannot discriminate against people's right to get married without an exceedingly strong justification.  And which gender you like to cuddle up with does reach the bar.

If you want a new jargon for the "condition of being committed in a two person relationship that as a consequence of being in such a condition the State is going to confer benefits on you that are not available to others no similarly situated" (let's agree not to call it that, anyway), then both same gender and opposite gender couples need to have the same title attached to them.  If you want to call it a "civil union" if it takes place under the auspices of the State and a "marriage" if it happens under the auspices of a religion, then so be it.  But it's the authority under which it happens that regulates which term applies in this scenario.

So non-religious unions will have to be called the same thing whether it's between opposite genders or the same gender.  And some religious institutions might not grant "marriages" to same gendered couples, but then the State cannot confer a benefit on them as a result of the religious ceremony they went through to become "married".

Just my opinion.

G.B.PROGRAMANl.....I totally get your entire post and know alot of people share your thoughts.....just wanted to comment on the "people/animal marriages" (your other examples humorously made their point).......of course since the animals cannot possibly give their consent that would be a horrible form of abuse.....however I know there are extremely brutal/hateful individuals who do force animals into vulgar acts......and I find those offenses to be the epitomy of that which is perversion.

Society really has alot of important issues to resolve doesn't it!....and dialogue is one of the factors that will be continue to be necessary to provide the solutions to the problems associated with those issues.

Thanks for your sincerely posting your views.
