I don't think the Yankees have the starting rotation to make a mid-season run like they have the past few years. The only thing the Yankees have going for them is a phenominal set-up man and closer. Not to mention they don't have Joe Torre anymore, big mistake by Steinbrenner.
I think this will be the first time in nearly 20 years we don't see the pinstripes in the post season.

The Yanks got career years from Posada and ARod last year...which I don't see them replicating. Damon and Matsui have continued to show deterioration, so I don't see them getting back to their forms of '06 or '05.
The Yankee bullpen has been good, but I think it's a mirage. Same thing for Mussina.
So I think the Yanks will improve offensively, but not to the juggernaut level that carried them to 94 wins last year.
.................
Yanks don't need career years from either of Arod or Po. Their season averages would do just fine, and be so much better than what their replacements are doing it's ridiculous.
970 runs is what they put up last year. Same group. Even without A-Rod and Posada awesome years, is mid to high 800's out of the question? I don't think so.
Yankee bullpen has been better than expected, and there's another infusion of power arms being groomed and promoted daily, The processes for Melancon and Cox have already started, and they've moved quicker than anyone anticipated.
Pettitte is the classic second half pitcher. Joba moves to the rotation for the second half. Maybe they swing a trade in July for another middle of the rotation starter in anticipation of Moose's decline.
I really, honestly, am not worried. This team is going to go on a run at some point.

If I may borrow from some Yankees fans who have had to defend some Red Sox fans prognostications, I guess the Red Sox may as well bow out and cede the AL East pennant to the Yankees; OR, that's why they play all 162 games before determining a winner.
Let me say this, although I am disappointed by the relatively flat start to this season, I feel very good about this year's Red Sox team and have every faith they will be one of the contenders for the post season. I don't think this team has fired on all cylinders yet, but they will soon. Having the day off yesterday and then starting a home stand against Milwaukee and Kansas City could be just what the doctor ordered to catch a breath and get on a good streak of winning games.
I'm putting a lot of hope into this home stand. If the Red Sox don't do well, I'll be disappointed but won't get into panic mode. That would start about mid-August. At that time, all Yankees fans can talk shite and feel some sick pleasure in knowing they are probably getting under my skin.

Unless the Sox do something to their bullpen, they are in trouble. Their bullpen is NOT as good as people think. Not saying the yanks win the division either. But it seems the Yankees problems rely not so much in their pitching and bullpen, but in their hitting and scoring, which will no doubt improve once Arod and Posada get back. Or at least until the freakin' braintrust finally take that overblown waste-of-an-at-bat, Giambi out of the line-up. The guy is simply killing us. He is the 3rd out every single time. He should never play again and just keep Duncan in there always. Anyway, when those two get back, the Yanks will role. The Sux on the other hand, could have some major relief help (outside of Papsmear) and if you don'thave a good bullpen by Aug./Sept, you don't win games.
