It really is a good deal for both sides. Moreso for the Brewers, obviously, but for Braun, it isn't as bad as it would seem. He is getting overpaid now, technically, based on his experience and age. By the end of the contract, he will more than likely be getting underpaid. But, if something happens, an injury for example, that greatly reduces his worth, it's money in the bank.
Also, he'll be, what, 31 or 32 when the contract expires? That gives him an opportunity to play for another 5 years or so for an obscene amount of cash, if he turns out like the Brewers are hoping.
