Baltimore Orioles (21-19) vs. Washington Nationals (18-24)

Recent Trends

Baltimore: Won five of last six games
Washington: Won three of last four games

Garrett Olson (2-0) 2.95 (1.26), 15/7
vs.
Shawn Hill (0-0) 3.56 (1.32), 18/9 *(L3: 2.22 (1.13), 7/6)

Garrett Olson has been a pleasant surprise thus far in the young season and he faces another team here for the first time. Opposing him, Shawn Hill has been on a tear lately, but has no wins to show for it. I think the Nats will have some trouble with Olson, but our offense seems to be primed for some consistent production even if it's just for a short time. Despite Hill's recent success, I think we do enough to win here. Advantage Baltimore.

Brian Burres (3-4) 3.59 (1.41), 21/16  *(L3: 5.20 (1.68), 8/6)
vs.
Odalis Perez (1-3) 3.71 (1.43), 39/20 *(L6: 3.22 (1.37), 29/15)

Odalis Perez has been horrible for awhile now, but he seems to be having a decent year so far. He's been slightly better over his last six starts despite having issues with walks recently. Brian Burres has come down to earth over his last three starts as you can see above and is at a point where he needs to bounce back and show that he can be counted on over the long term in the rotation. I think we drop this game because of Burres' recent struggles. Advantage Washington.

Jeremy Guthrie (2-3) 4.18 (1.29), 39/17
vs.
John Lannan (3-4) 3.74 (1.56), 29/18 *(L3: 6.00 (1.93), 5/4)

John Lannan had been pitching very well and had given up only one run over 20 innings and three starts, but he has been crudely brought back to earth over his last three starts. His ERA remains under three, but this is one that Guthrie should have no trouble out-pitching. Advantage Baltimore.

I think we can take two from Washington here at the very least. Burres has struggled after getting off to a strong start and I just hope his shoulder isn't bothering him already. Our offense and resilience may see that we end up taking the middle game anyways, but no matter how the cookie crumbles, we should take the series here with some more exciting Orioles baseball.

It's always nice to win a tough series as we go into what should be a much easier one. We'd have a real nice run going if we could win this series as well.

Looks like we'll face some solid pitching, so it'll definitely be interesting to see if our offense is finally heating up, or if what we've seen the last three or four weeks is more like what we can expect from the offense for the rest of the season. Olson is definitely intriguing once again. I think everybody is waiting for him to collapse and get shelled, but he's avoided it so far.

I think this is a bigger series than it might originally seem. We're starting to play better after the last two series, but this is a series we ought to win. We'll either keep the momentum up as we go back out on the road for two more tough series' (Yanks and Rays), or we could blow it and set ourselves up for a tough road trip. We'll see which way the O's lean.

BTW... The "rivalry" between the O's and Nats has seemed pretty non-existant so far, but to be honest, I would love to see us stomp the Nats, especially after the stuff they pulled at the Inner Harbor yesterday. Anybody else feel the same way?

Washington is one of the few teams out there that we have the edge on in bot batting and pitching (by the stats).  I think we're sending out the pitchers to have a real shot at a sweep in this one.  Tough to sweep in a rivalry, though.  The Orioles are also historically AWFUL in interleague play.  Could this be the year that changes?

We should win this one and I think we have a decent chance to sweep, but the bad weather seems to be following the team around, 'cause it's supposed to rain all day today, which will probably force yet another double-header and screw up the rotation even more...isn't the saying "April showers..." not "May downpours..?"

This is in deed an interesting series, as it provides us a chance to take a TON of momentum on the road.  Obviously, sweeps aren't gimmies, but I think one is within reach here, especially if we keep pitching the way we have.  I'd love a 5-0 homestand to put us at 24-19 and at 5 games over .500.

That being said, there's nothing wrong with a series win and a 4-1 homestand.  Vc - you're right:  this series could really set the tone and is a big one.

What happened at the Inner Harbor?  I know the one O's/Nats game I went to last year was incredibly annoying with respect to the few Nats fans who wanted to talk smack about the O's.  I was thinking, "OK - you are the same fans who came here and didn't cheer at all for 15 years, and now you have a crap team, and you want to catch the MARC up here to talk trash against the team you 'rooted' for?"  Whatever, DC.

Ah, well that changed then, and I hope that's the way it goes, 'cause it's a mess around here right now.

We will win this series only if the the O's don't look at the schedule ahead of them and keep focused on the Nationals. It is hard core with the Yankees < Rays , Yankees again and then a 4 gamer with Boston. Well it looks like me who's doing the looking ahead. Go Orioles !!!!!!!!!!
