Roth’s days as a Dolphin are numbered

Defensive end Matt Roth will probably be a good fit in a situational role for some NFL defense. It just won't be with the Miami Dolphins.

Since arriving in South Florida via Nick Saban’s 2005 draft, the short-armed bull rusher has struggled to find his niche in the Dolphins’ defensive front. The former Iowa standout has had limited success in pass-rushing situations, tallying just 7.5 sacks in three seasons. Roth’s career high of 3.5 sacks came in 2006, and when coupled with three forced fumbles, it represents by far the most productive campaign of his career.

Unfortunately, that’s just not enough for a starting-caliber defensive end, especially when you consider that his run-stopping abilities are far from legendary. The former second-round pick has just two tackles for a loss in three seasons and hasn't been an immovable object on running plays.

However, Roth's underachieving against the run is not the main reason why he will be handed his walking papers sooner than later.

Roth’s biggest impediment to success will be Miami’s not-so-gradual shift to a true 3-4 alignment, and whether that transition is complete in 2008 or thereafter is of no real consequence. After all, the Bill Parcells regime has no allegiance to Roth, and there’s really no room for a player who's too small to play end in a 3-4 but lacks the athleticism to play linebacker in that same alignment.

Parcells has made no secret of his desire to bring in big bodies, especially at the point of attack, so it’s unrealistic to think that Roth -- who weighs in at roughly 275 pounds -- will be able to bulk up enough to play a 3-4 end position that is often occupied by guys approaching the 300-pound mark.

As for his linebacking prospects, Roth was considered to be a relatively unathletic defensive end, so there’s really no chance of him moving to a position that would require him to shadow running backs and tight ends in the open field.

Roth will likely land on his feet quickly, because he has shown signs of developing into a steady power rusher and run stopper; and at age 25, he still has plenty of time to develop his repertoire.

It’s just that said development won’t occur in a Dolphins uniform.

What an underachiever.

I honestly thought with the offensive line's focus on Jason Taylor and Joey Porter on the edge, Matt Roth would have a break out year as his first year as a starter. He disappointed really disappointed me.

This article makes me upset that we ever let Kevin Carter go. I was OK, at best, with it at the time, again, thinking Roth was capable of a monster year like 7+ sacks. Yes, I know Carter's contract was ridiculous, we needed to get younger on the defensive line, and he didn't do much with the Buccaneers last year.

But when you have the 3rd ranked defense in the league, you have to do whatever it takes to keep that defense together and fix one of the worst offenses in the league. I still think it was a bonehead move to try to restructure his contract. We had plenty in the cap (one thing Saban and Cameron actually did right) and to CUT him, was just unthinkable. He had a solid two years in Miami, give him what he wants and keep the defense together!

I miss 3rd downs: Vonnie Holliday with Kevin Carter on the inside, and David Bowens and Jason Taylor on the edge was definitely one of the best pass rushing group I've ever seen.

Thank you for one reason, and one reason only Matt Roth: Helping us beat the Patriots 21-0 in 2006, piling up 3 tackles, 1 1/2 sacks and 1 FF, as a BACKUP.

Matt Roth: FLAME ON FLAME OFF.

Roth simply doesn't have the talent or size that Parcells covets. He's done unless they keep him as a reserve. I also agree that seeing Carter go was tough. So was seeing Madison, Surtain, and now Thomas, and quite possibly Taylor go. It's time we replaced these players with people just as capable.

Speaking of Patrick Surtain, didn't we get Matt Roth for him?  That makes me want to puke.

As for Sam Madison, I think we got rid of him at the right time.  But he had 4 picks last season?  When he doesn't take plays off, he gets so many balls thrown his way.  Go figure.  I'm perfectly OK with the Sam Madison-Will Allen swap, in a sense.

I still don't understand why we CUT the best player in franchise history--Zach Thomas, let's not even go there.

As much as I love Jason Taylor, Lito Sheppard for him straight up would be sweet.

It's time we replaced these players with people just as capable.

Couldn't have said it any better.  Best post of the year?

I don't believe Matt Roth has a big cap number. Therefore I believe we could be getting rid of a YOUNG player with a decent upside. I don't like the move. The Dolphins need players like this. low cap numbers, young and ambitious. I believe working under the Bill Parcells regime may be exactly what he needs. Lets not jump the gun here. Be patient. btw.... If I'm wrong and he has a big cap number ship him off.

I thought Roth was decent or ok. I don't think he was all that. I wouldn't be shocked if was cut because he didn't seem like he wanted to play sometimes. He was invisible at times, then at times he made his presence known. I don't like that. I want someone who is going to give 110% on the field, not just when he feels like it. Know what I mean??

Maybe when he gets cut the Raiders will sign him to a 4 year $50 million dollar contract.

I knew it...Like i,ve been saying for 3 seasons the Matt Roth pick was a waisted pick..That pick should have been LT--Khaliff Barnes of the
