Below is the link to NFL.com's story on: you guessed it, charges of Lofa Tatupu's DUI.
So, Lofa is new to the list of "sorry, i messed up" guys. All I have to say is I'm shocked about the charges of his drunk driving, and it better be a one-time thing. We just gave tons of money on a long term deal to this guy, and he can't mess it up. Thoughts?

This isn't Ok with me at all. I drink a little, well alot, but I don't drive drunk. He should have more sense than that. I shouldn't be the one to preach though. I don't have a lot of room to talk, but this is just stupid.
The funny thing is he was driving a 2006 Hyundai. That's a little wierd.

I'm a forgiving person and it sounds like this might have just been a one time thing and he really did a good job of owning up to it. Just like Renobilly I walked away thinking 'WTF? He drives a Hyundai!' Seems weird.

Last time I checked Lofa and every other pro athlete was as human as any of us posting on this blog. Look if you have not had a d.u.i. then consider your self lucky. Did any of you go over to a buddy's house for the big game this year. You know hanging out all day watching the pregame and consuming one beer after another. And you say well I don't feel drunk, yeah I can drive home. You get 2 blocks from your house you go to make a turn, forget to use your turn signal. Next thing you know you see blue and red lights flashing. The officer comes up and asks Have you been drinking?" You stutter well I had a couple. Officer "Do you know why I pulled you over?" No . Officer " You forgot to use your blinker."
Well guess what you just gave the officer enough reason to ask you to step out of the car take a couple of field sobriety tests and blow on the breathalizer. You "passed" the field tests but blew a .081. Guess what you just got your first DUI
So count your blessings if you have not had one

I don't consider myself lucky or count my blessings. I take a cab.
That said, athletes are nothing more than people and are all as fallible as the rest of us. Tatupu screwed up and will pay the consequences. Hopefully, he'll learn from it and not do it again. My concern was that he wasn't any where near .081. He was about twice the legal limit - definitely not a matter of having had a couple and thinking he was good to go. A matter of having way too many and not thinking at all.

Man, everyone here (well almost everyone) is acting like this guy did something a lot worse than a misdemeanor. Look at Jeremy Stevens we dealt with his attempted rape charge in college to his MULTIPLE arrests for everything from DUIs to drug possession. The difference, Steven's couldn't catch a ball to save his life. Lofa Tatupu is a 2-time all pro line backer in only his second year in the NFL. Think he is under 30 years old. Almost every under 30 year old who has some money, gets drunk. I'm not saying go drink and drive. But don't be richeous on this guy, saying oh he's done something soo bad. Was he involved in a triple murder? No. Did he have multiple weapons with our liscences? No. And also, how many DUIs does he have on his record? One. Not two, not three. One DUI. He is a smart guy, you don't become a 2 Time All Pro line backer being a dimwit. He will learn not to drink and drive again. You can start going crazy when he gets his second DUI. If he gets another one. Don't say what if until it actually happens. Go Hawks! He will still be a pro-bowler and an all-pro again.

First off Ragingbull you're understating Lofa's accomplishments in the NFL.. but his rating as a player shouldn't have any affect on how people judge the situation. Whether he's a playing on the practice squad or perennial probowler, wrong is wrong. That being said I think most of us agrees it's hopefully a lapse in judgment and one time thing. If it becomes a pattern than we have a problem, if he straightens out than it's water under the bridge.

It's one thing. He hasn't done anything bad in his times in the NFL or in college at USC. He made one mistake, he didn't run from the police. The cop thought he was swerving, then when he actually saw that he was he turned his sirens on and told Lofa Tatupu to pull over, which he did into a McDonald's restaurant. He didn't resist arrest, and it was his first ever problem. He has to pay half of one pay check. His big contract doesn't start officially until next year so he has to pay approximately 15 grand. He won't be suspended by the NFL since it is only his first offense. Also you gotta be glad of a few things: that he didn't run from the police, he didn't hurt anyone or himself, he didn't cause the cops any major problems (high speed chases, gun fights). When stuff like this happens I do two comparisons. One a comparison to other stuff that he did. He hasn't done anything before. Two, a comparison to other people in the NFL. He isn't the first, or the last to get a DUI. At least it wasn't a felony. And what he did compared to other players in the NFL, doesn't really stack up to how bad others have done stuff, but of course isn't a good thing to drink and drive. I'm just saying, that this is ONLY his first time, he hasn't done anything like it before.
