Arlen Specter, like many of you don't think he is, is doing his job. Why? He is a high ranking member of the Senate's Judiciary (i never know if I spell that right) Commitee, and was the chairman of it from '05 to '07. Of that commitee, he is a member of 3 subcommitees.
1.) Subcommittee on Antitrust, Competition Policy and Consumer Rights 2.) Subcommittee on Crime and Drugs 3.) Subcommitee of the Constitution. Now the the one we're going to be looking at is the Subcommitee of Antritrust yadda yadda.
What does that entail? Ensuring all laws of big organizations, like the NFL, are kept in line with the laws that apply to them. The NFL has an "antitrust exemption" status so they don't get split up because the NFL's existance prevents competition, which in America, would violate anti-trust laws. The reason why is because the competition happens withen the corporation of the NFL itself. Therefore, it is exempt to anti-trust laws so long as certain criteria are met. One is that the competition is open and fair among all teams, and any violations as such are dealt with accordingly. MLB has the same deal, which is why they were investigated with the steroids. Now an NFL team has been caught is arguebly one of the biggest violations of the rules which could jeopardize the anti-trust exemption status. In doing so, the Senate Judiciary Commitee reserves the right to execute investigations so that it feels that things are back on the level, if they don't also reserve the right to levee their own penalties, which can include revoking the NFL's antitrust exemption. This would allow a variety of things, including individual teams given the right to work deals with cable companies of their own choice, removing it from the NFL's hands. Essentially, in doing so, he would give the teams more individual power, and open the door to competition outside the NFL.
So to all you moron's who are screaming, "Specter, focus on your job!!!!" Guess what....he is doing just that.

Yeah well here's the rest of the truth.
Yes a part of what he does is Anti Trust but by focusing his time on something that has been investigated, punishment was issued, no new evidence has come out, other evidence has been proven to be bunk, he is carrying on something that should be dropped. While continuing what seems on what appears to be the vendetta of a football fan instead of a state Senator he is neglecting the rest of his responsibilities.
For example, a cops job is to ticket jaywalkers. So if a cop sat at the same spot and wrote jaywalking tickets all day technically he's doing his job, but he's not doing it well because he's neglecting the rest of his beat. Get it?
In addition to the services that he provides his constituents, below is the rest of Arlen's "beat"
So how about this "Specter focus on the REST of your job"
Committee on Appropriations
[ appropriations.senate.gov ]
- Agriculture, Rural Development, and Related Agencies
- Defense
- Homeland Security
- Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies
- State, Foreign Operations
- Transportation, Treasury, the Judiciary, HUD & Related Agencies
Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education, Ranking Member
[appropriations.senate.gov/labor.cfm]
Committee on the Judiciary, Ranking Member
[ judiciary.senate.gov ]
- Administrative Oversight and the Courts
- Antitrust, Competition Policy and Consumer Rights
- Constitution, Civil Rights and Property Rights
Committee on Veterans' Affairs

Pa4Life,
Would you agree in this case maybe your good Senator needs to defer to another member of the committee, I mean he has a conflict of interest hear with Comcast and the Law Firm that represents Comcast being sued by the NFL. He also seems only concerned about this due to the Eagles, I have to question if he was ever truely concerned over this because it would stand to reason that he would want to look into the league as a whole not just one team, especially when you already know the team in question has alread admitted to breaking the rule. To be fair shouldn't the Senator want to find out if this is more wide spread?

Simple difference needs to be made...spygate is an in house, in the NFL house problem that does not affect the public. Specter is not doing his job, he is comparing the situation to steroids in baseball. If he wants to do something that does affect the fans of the game, investigate steriods in the game. The Patiots are not, I repeat, NOT violating any anti trust laws in the matter, there are no rules or laws in the matter. Labeling people who rightly think he is wasting tax dollars due to his vendetta morons closes your thoughts on the subject as cornholed.
How in the world would the NFL and the commish come to the conclusion they have, after levying the largest fines and lost of draft picks in league history-in house mind you- with a gang of anittrust lawyers in tow, and not think the matter is resolved? Morons like you, who are continuing to cry wolf on this silly matter, are screaming in an empty forest. It is over, the NFL is done talking and punishing for such a minimal matter blown out of proportion, you should do the same. Spector himself is hardly 100% tuned into the matter only to save face but not concerned enough in it that he has delayed getting into having an independant council made up until after his chemo is complete.
Do us all a favor and get off this, I will have to ask that any team with big doors gets looked into by the Spectorgators, for having those huge doors opened during opponents place kicking.
DOn't bother writing or rating back, I do not care to see a reply, you are of the type who is closed to any dialogue anyway. With your ending, this is the proof I need to know you are both vindictive and closed to the very dialgue you demand.

First off, he is a ranking of several commitees. Who are you to tell him to focus on one thing or another?!? Some low-life schmuck who probably doesn't even vote. Point is this (and I love how the wikipedia reference was editted shortly before your post btw to add those new subcommittee's that were not listed)....
The NFL is a huge business in the US, Specter has MAJOR influence in the federal government. The tie between the two is quite close, as the NFL draws HUGE revenue which helps fund the government through a variety of methods (taxes mostly). But just like any other Antitrust exempt company, even if they handle out punishment to those who potentially violate that status, if ANY federal official in the Senate feels that it was not enough, they are allowed to pursue the right to do a federal investigation, just like they did in major league baseball. That's the bottom line.
Also, you don't live in Pennsylvania. I doubt you follow the government to closely since everything you posted is cut and paste from one of the easiest websites availible. But I for one know that this is not Arlen Specter's only endeavor. It is however his loudest speaking one since SOOO MANY PEOPLE ARE FOOTBALL FANS!!!! And any news as such follows quickly in this. Do you actually follow every action of even YOUR OWN STATE SENATOR? Let alone those outside from others? I follow the ones I vote for, and the actions of the Senate, but hardly the individual battles they choose. Seriously, do some real research about what people are doing before you accuse them of not focusing on their other jobs. And again, it's not your call to decide what they focus on. He's a member of several commitee's and it is his decision IF he does focus on any one single thing. You want that to change, go run for a seat in the Senate. Good luck, there's not that many...wonder if you even know how many there are.
That's how you shut someone down.

KAM, possibly. But it is also possible that Arlen is a figurehead being the ranking member. Any move like this by a commitee member was probably discussed before the commitee before any comments were made, or pre-actions taken. If he is alone then, then I would not disagree with you. However, I side with the stance Arlen Specter probably wants to take if NFL's antitrust exemption is removed, which allows teams to search out local broadcasting contracts, as well as other nationwide contracts, not just with Comcast and the NFL Network. How that all works, I'm a little foggy on. Needless to say, I don't like some of the broadcasting done with the NFL Network right now since you have to pay extra on the Comcast package, but not any satelite company's. I do enjoy comcast network though, they do a nice job of broadcasting the local teams I live in which is currently Phillies, Flyers, and Sixers (not really interested in the first 2 though, but I always support the local team, even if they rival my own)

You don't like my opinion so you resort to personal attacks?
Actually, I didn't get that list from Wikipedia I got it from Arlen Specter's own webpage. Funny t | |
