Yes there are players in the baseball universe other than players called Yankees or Red Sox.

Here in Kansas City we have Joakim Soria that so far has put up the following stats:

8 for 8 in save opportunities, 14.1 IP, 4 H, 1 BB, 16 K, 0 R, .140 OPP BA, 0.35 WHIP

I think those numbers are every bit as impressive as Mariano Rivera and merits a mention as well.

Those are impressive numbers, but don't deserve a mention in an article about Rivera.  His success has been so consistent and so proven that it is simply amazing he can continue to achieve at this level at the age of 38.  With basically one pitch & speed, as the article mentioned.

Plus I couldn't help but notice that Rivera has 2 more saves this year.  If people wanted to hear about Soria I doubt they would be reading an article on Rivera.

Yeah, & same is true of Zach Greinke.  But the media would rather talk endlessly about Joba Chamberlain & Phil Hughes instead.  Mariano Rivera is & has been awesome, but I'd much rather read about a guy & a team I haven't read some loving article about every day for 12 years.

Yes, Soria has started extremely well, also. But, is he 38? Does he play under the NY microscope?

Look, I can understand your frustration that yet another Yankee (or Red Sox) player is being spotlighted, and in many cases you'd be right, but Rivera is quite simply the greatest reiever to ever play the game.....and still bringing it. Let me know when Soria is antwhere near there career wise.

Right on boy.... I've been tooting Joakim's horn (that didn't sound right) for a couple years now. I've been trying to get some Royals fans to contribute to the Royals thread I made: www.sportsline.com/mcc/messages/chrono/8240773/0/0

It's hard to find Royals fans or at least on here anyway. feel free to contribute to the thread, I usually cant on the weekends but try and stay up to date during the week

DUDE..........

I'm all for people loving their own players, but you are trying to compare a guy with 25 career saves to someone who has 453 reg. season saves and another 34 in the post season.

That is an impressive start to ONE season for your guy, be he hardly deserves a mention when people are talking about HOF closers.

If your guy has numbers as good or better than MO's at the end of the season, I will bow my head and apologize.

maybe this will enlighten those who want to bark about soria. the man has pitched just 83 innings in his career. how many closers got off to hot stats and then sunk to the bottom. look at derrick turnbow for example.

dont get me wrong soria was off to a great start...SO WERE A HUNDRED OTHER PITCHERS. mariano rivera has 62 career wins, a 2.32 ERA in close to 1000 innings, 453 saves.

soria has 2 wins, 25 career saves. dont get me wrong, he is off to a blazing start but in 15 years if hes still doing it then he will get his.

this article is to pay respect to the best closer in the history of baseball. dont put it on the yankees because thats who he plays for.

Rivera is the best closer of our era however he has seen his better days.Would anyone disagree he is on the downside of his career?  (rivera)

He's got a few more years left but his best days are behind him, just because the Royals with their miniscule payroll and even smaller fan base make little to no news doesn't mean we the have crappy players Jaokim Soria has been the best closer in baseball the last 2 years.

I made a thread earlier what if the Yankees had the Royals pitching staff...  I think they would own the entire league.....

I firmly believe this however I wouldn't trade our staff for any other pitching staff currently.

Soria is a great player if he played in Boston or the other coast he would be a house hold name..

true he doesn't have the numbers Rivera does he has more talent and the way the Royals close games this dude might be able to pitch for 20 more years.

You Royals fans really have to put down the crack pipe.  I mean I dislike the Yankees as much as the next person, but you have absolutely no room t be comparing a 16-21 team that hasn't made the playoffs since ??? with a dynasty that makes the playoffs every year.

I realize that you're all excited and feel like talking smack because you have a few good young players, but the season is 6 weeks old!  Come back and talk to us when they are actually in the playoff race at the end of August.

tough to rate a newbie against one of the greatest ever....however, I will say Soria is way better than Alex Gordon will ever be.

Is that a joke?  Yes, Soria is having a fine season but is just one good one-quarter of a season.  The reason for the article is not because Rivera is having a fine season, it's because he's had a similarly amazing career, which includes doing this in the post-season.  Many, many players are having a good season so far.

"firmly believe this however I wouldn't trade our staff for any other pitching staff currently."

Well then you would make a bad GM. The Royals team ERA is 4.36 I believe which is pretty solid, but nothing to sneeze at. There are a bunch of other pitching staffs I would rather have, one being the Rays led by Kazmir and Shields (who has 2 CG SO's in his last 3 starts) with Percival as a closer.

Rivera is no doubt the best there ever was.  He is a first ballot hall of famer and even at his worst has and is still capable of shutting down 90% of major league hitters.  Not only that, but he is a class act, and you never here about him getting in trouble on or off the field.  What an icon and role model for our youngsters to look up to in todays game of baseball.

Yes he is having a good seaon,so far. But spare me the small market blues your owner could spend money on players (he gets enough from the Red Sox & Yankees) but he chooses his wallet over you the KC fans. Soria does not deserve the same billing though for a career ,,,,,even you must admit that Mo is one oif the all time greats.!!!!!!!   Good luck to you and your Royals they are showing signs of becoming a good team.....must be the manager .... where are his roots oh yes thats right the Yankees.......Hmmm

Soria is a good player, and has had an exceptional start to the year, but I think you guys missed the point of this article.  Everyone wrote off Mo at the end of last year, said the Yanks were fools for keeping him around that he had nothing left, yada, yada, yada.  Soria has been great, and lidge has pitched well too, but neither of them or any clser has the history that Mariano has had.  We aren't dissing the small market clubs, I think this article's point was that Mo is still among the elite closer sin baseball despite his age, despite everyone thinking he was done.

Secondly, I mean no disrespect for Soria, hey i own him on my fantasy team, but who ever said that Soria has been the best clsoer in baseball the past 2 years needs their head examined.  Soria was so solid last year he lost the closer job at one point.  Let's see him continue these same stats throughout this year and next year and then we can talk about adding Soria to the level of elite closers.  It ain't just about what you do in the first couple months of the season it's about longevity and consistency over the course of many years that gets you into that elite level.
