That is really sad, taking advantage of kids like that. When your a kid ( especially a poor one ) and someone is giving you money it is difficult to say no.

Thousands? How About 90%! They all get money!!! This is a joke right? OOOOOH the college kid takes cash from boosters, a coach, etc. Leave them alone is not the right answer. The schools need to reel in the alum and let them know that this is not the pros! These kids get paid already! Its called scholarships! But in this world education doesn't mean a whole lot.

Lets get this straight.
If the NBA didnt have a ONE YEAR college rule for rookies, OJ Mayo would have never ever stepped foot on a USC campus. OR any college campus for that matter.

The most aggravating part of all of this is your original point: only the school and the player will be held accountable for this. RIDICULOUS. Yes, Mayo should be punished. Yes, USC should be punished. But the stiffest penalty should go to the scumbag who lured him into this situation. USC may or may not have known about everything, but the OTL report was saying that Mayo "only" got about $30,000 of $200,000 or so that was doled out around him. Mayo was STUPID/IGNORANT for accepting anything, or associating with these people, but what they are doing is CRIMINAL by enabling this vicious cycle. Until they start have SEVERE sanctions against the people who perpetuate this nonsense, it doesn't make sense to completely vilify these STUDENT-athletes (but that doesn't mean let them off the hook).

I agree with mooni....the people who prey on these talented teenagers should face the biggest penatly.
I also feel that Mayo should have know better and said no, no matter how difficult. He has everything coming to him now, he just had to wait a year. Whether the rule it right or wrong, it should have to be followed.
I also disagree with the point some are making stating that this happens all over. I disagree. It probably happens more than we think with the higher profile players in both FB and BB, but I dont see college kids taking money hand over foot. Could be wrong, hope I am not.

Here's the thing. The person with the least to lose in all this is Mayo. He's going to the NBA to make his millions, so I doubt the things he recieved at USC are keeping him from the poorhouse. At worst, he'll have to return everything and repay the money that he'll already have in spades.
I'm sick of people playing the "how much money did the school make off of Mayo?" card. Look, you can argue forever about whether or not the rules against accepting money/gifts is FAIR to the athletes. The bottom line is, it's against the rules the NCAA has set up, and these guys know that it is. Thinking a rule is unfair is not an excuse to break it.
Secondly, this whole "Everyone does it" argument is just as pointless. So if a ton of people engage in rule-breaking behavior, that means that any specific person should escape being punished because all the other people weren't? Either we catch every single one or don't bother? That makes a lot of sense
