This idea suddenly came to me after reading what another poster said about there never being any bowl games in the north for financial reasons.  I say, "BS!"  We need to create one.  And with all this talk about whether or not the SEC can play in the cold got me to thinking.......

The game could be played at Lambeau Field on January 5th.  If it was played in December nobody would give a rat's furry fart tunnel.  Nobody would watch it.  BUT, if you play it a couple days before the big show, it's gets some recognition AND doesn't take away from the NCG.

Now, who do you invite?  That's easy........the Big Ten and the SEC.  Actually, I think it would be even better to invite a warm-climate team and a cold-climate team.  Think about the match-ups we could see..........Northwestern vs. Mississippi St...............Minnesota vs. Vanderbilt.............Syracuse vs. Stanford.................On second thought, maybe nobody would watch The Ice Bowl.

Seriously, I think a game like this would be a hit for no other reason than there are no bowl games in the north.  And I know what you're going to say...."But Huteck....what about the Motor City Bowl?"  Yeah yeah yeah........that game is played under a dome, doesn't count, next question!

The Ice Bowl.  That's what this country needs......another bowl game.  But why call it the Ice Bowl?  Well......because it's my thread.  That's why.  But I'm open to suggestion.  Throw some more names my way.  I'll make a list and get my people on it

Yep.......by next season's end the work will be nearly complete, the signatures on the contracts will be dry and by the winter of 2010 we will have ourselves a new game......The Ice Bowl (or whatever I decide to call it).

I wouldn't actually mind seeing a sec team face a big ten team in a bowl game up north in the snow. If teams from up north have to come down south to play in a bowl game (example) michigan going down to florida, southern teams should come up north. I like the idea of the ice bowl. Good idea hetuck1.

I don't know...

While I think some merit is attributed to the "homefield advantage", I am not sure if an Ice Bowl is the answer. We have to remember that most teams in the north don't play outside in that type of weather. The northern teams have indoor facilities for that time of year. Also teams in the north recruit players from the south....so not all the players (if any) are going to be used to playing in the bitter cold of January.

Matchups are the keys to the game anyways....not usually the weather. Some southern teams play a "smashmouth" style and the weather would favor their style of play over a team like Purdue (who is in the north but plays a spread and cannot just power run the ball).

We also have to consider if the teams will even accept a bid to the Ice Bowl. Teams look at bowls are rewards and a good vacation. Would fans from the SEC want to travel north? Possibly....but the team would probably be able to decline that bid and accept another.

This doesn't seem like a great idea to me. Although I believe the slight advantages of the Pac 10 (Rose Bowl), SEC (Sugar bowl, and Florida bowls) makes a slight difference it is not usually THE deciding factor. The best team often wins those games.

I know I wouldn't want to go to the Ice Bowl....if an alternative was the Fiesta, Rose, Sugar, Orange Bowls were alternatives. If lesser teams are put in the game (not on par with a Capital One Bowl or something to that extent) then it will not mean a whole lot, and written off as pointless.

The only bowl that really works in the North is the Motor City Bowl. Because Detroit needs the money for thei economy and they have a nice stadium which is indoor.

Just my 2 cents....take it for what it is worth.

I say why not. Give it a try for three years and then see if it has a future.

You have a snowball's chance in hell of a getting an SEC team to play Lambeau in January.  In fact the same applies to any non-Big 10 team.  Good luck.

Seriously, I think a game like this would be a hit for no other reason than there are no bowl games in the north.

no way to describe what an unrealistic idea that is, hetuck ! the only reason that bowls are in Southern climes is because of the money that northerners spend in and around the south. I mean who in their right mind could stand 3 hrs in open air Wisconsin, especially in January.

The whole bowl thing is a joke anyway. Now if there were a playoff, then you could get home games in the great white north. that would be great, UGA at Camp Randall. the Gators in Ann Arbor. I think , though, that as long as we have Disney World the bowls will remain down here. After all, when the super bowl champs are asked where they are going next , they never say " I'm going to Cedar Point" !

Every conference can win in Cold weather except SEC teams.

Kentucky has a great home winning streak in October and November.

Michigan owes alot of teams a return trip to the South.

Including Florida State. The Seminoles were a juggernaught at the time.........Michigan? Mediocre. Michigan still felt big headed enough to do a 1 and done.

Amazing.

You do know you guys end your season early to not play in that weather? You also know you play only maybe 2-3 games that are cold, if that. You do also know that you practice all year in the weather you would get in Florida or California for bowl games? The only disadvantage you guys have is when you are playing say LSU in the superdome but that weather excuse is crap, defintily when a good bit of your players came from the south haha. Sorry this isn't nfl where you have Ice Pro's like Brett Farve, there wouldn't be much of an advantage except for you guys getting home field advantage.

Every conference can win in Cold weather except SEC teams. Now now, Percy.....I never said anything about the SEC not being able to win a game in the cold.  But lately it seems that everybody is of the mindset that the SEC and the Big 10 are arch rivals.  That's why I initially chose those two conferences.  But I'm open to anybody playing in the Ice Bowl.  Why not invite Texas Tech up to play Pitt.....or UCLA vs. Toledo?  It's an original idea with an entirely different approach.  And......if the southern teams are able to win up north perhaps we can put this arguement to rest.  Either way........regardless of what anybody says, The Ice Bowl would be a hit

Sorry Gator but you missed the entire point of this post.  I never once proclaimed The Ice Bowl to be a home game for a Big 10 team.  Nor did I say it should be reserved only for Big 10 and SEC schools.  The whole idea is based on the fact there is 1.....ONE bowl game in the north.  And that's even indoors.  My idea stems from nothing more than the need for a change of pace.........something interesting for our viewing enjoyment.
