Baker is a GREAT pass catching TE, we have not used him. I can remember great catches, not big drops... I am sure you will agree. The issues I have with Baker come out of his mouth. He is no different than any other modern day athlete crying about what others are making and they want thiers...

Give the guy a break. He was treated poorly as was Pete Kendel, if he only kept his mouth shut during bad times I would be more on his side.

The problem I have as a whole is these guys all sign contracts, can someone please perform up to its level and honor it. Look at Larry Fitz, he OUTPERFORMED his contract and was rewarded, he is a great ball player and never causes off field issues, I jus wish there were more guys in the league like him.

It could be worse, we could be like the NBA !!!!

using fitz is a bad example..they gave him a ton of money and strapped themselves and HAD to rework his contract...it wasn't based on his play but rather on the cap space they didn't have....

anyway i like baker and since keller looks nothing like a te, i wouldn't mind him in the slot while baker was on the line

the rook is a solid player however i think it was extremly stupidtoo draft up for him

but what you going to do the Jets like to do atleast one stupid thing every draft

and i aint bashing his talent just not smart too trade up

Buba is here too block and try to score some TDs in the redzone

baker is done as a jet id be shocked if he stays

I think last year they should have drafted a TE so the jets jumped on the most talented TE this year however honesty i would have rather waited got another pick and drafted Martin Rucker... oh well

Why release Baker, he can catch and run routes well, he can block. We should sign him to an extention and release Bubba and take the 1.6M in dead money for 2008 (if we would release him).

With Keller as our TE that can stretch with speed and can catch well plus he has many good athletic skills, and Baker can catch great and block, it's a dinamic duo with the 2 TE's.

While I think Baker is becoming another mouthpeice like Coles, I do see him as being a servicable TE for us in 08. He can block and has great hands, its just that hes not insanely fast. By hiring new agents such as Neil Shwartz (yes Pete Kendalls agent), he has upped the ante on getting his contract re-worked with the Jets. I find it funny that when he was given the shot at free agency a few years back he got virtually no interest and ended up coming back and signing a sweet deal here, but is now raising a stink about money. When he signed his deal in 06 (4 yrs 7mil) the money being thrown around by NFL teams was fairly tame under the old Collective Bargaining Agreement. His base salary (not including pro-rated signing bonuses/roster bonuses/workout bonuses) has ranked in the top 10 of starting TEs in the last two years and with Baker ranking 20th among starting TEs from 06 through 07, so the question becomes "did he out perform his contract?" I wouldnt say so, and Im sure thats what the Jets front office is saying too as they picked up Bubba Franks and Dustin Keller.

Another thing to chew on, Baker was given an advance of his 08 salary in late 07 to re-work our cap space this year. He costs us roughly $684,000 this year if he isnt re-worked, so he would be a cheap depth player behind Keller and Franks if he stays here. Thats not the best way to handle one of your vets, but I think if he had kept his pie hole shut he wouldve got a new deal to finish out his career here in NY in the long run.

Look at Indy's offense they have so many weapons for Peyton to throw too.  I fully understand comparing Peyton to Kellen isn't even possible but if we create the same offense for Kellen.  Todays NFL is a spread pass happy NFL.  I still love the "Run and Shoot."  The only problem with that offense is it's hard to hit a deep pass because of the blitz schemes.  WR's just don't have the time to run deep routes because the blitzers are so fast.  So by getting the H-back it's kind of a modification of the "run and shoot."

I believe in what Mangini is trying to do here.  He went out and improved the O-line.  Then he went and drafted a speedy TE to create mismatches and a big WR who can make some big catches for us this year if put into the right situation.  If we can establish the run game our passing game will open up like the red sea. 

Chris Baker is a serviceable TE.  He will never be considered in the top half of the TE's. 

Just cut him we can get by with Keller & Bubba.  Too bad we lost Sean Ryan, he was a better blocker
