This is a great pick for the Dallas Mavericks as their new coach. Carlisle is exactly what they need to step it up to the next level. They already know how to score, now with Carlisle's defensive mentality, he will be able to take them to the next level. He should have never been fired in Detroit.

Um, they've had a coach with a defensive mentality for the past 3+ seasons. I'm not at all convinced that Carlisle is a BETTER defensive coach than Avery.

I would have to disagree. I think Avery really tried, but he still comes from the school of Don Nelson and could never completely get away from that. Part of a great defense is having a solid half court offense, and the Mavs never showed that they had that under Nelly or Avery. Carlisle may not be BETTER, but he is definitely a breath of fresh air.

A breath of fresh air would be to bring in players that respect and listen to the coach. Another exhale whould be for Dirk to play freakin defense.

Maybe they need to trade Dirk while they can still get somebody good for him.

I don't see how you can say that Dallas doesn't have a good half court offense. It's Dirk's entire game. The fast break stats for this year aren't clearly compiled in one place, but last season Dallas was third in the NBA in scoring but only 12th in Fast Break scoring. Which actually makes them one of the best half court offensive teams in the NBA.

The problems with this team lie on both ends of the floor. They have too many one dimensional players.
Dirk - great offensive player, defense has been better lately - still not great
Howard - average defense, average offense - but young and getting better
Kidd - good passer on offense, defensively strugles against quicker guards
Jet Terry - good shooter, below average defender
Dampier - good rebounder, average defender, no offense
Thats your top 5. Not good enough to get it done! Something has to change, or these guys have to figure it out.

It is clear that Dampier should be the go to guy next season. The team needs to realize that Dirk is no longer the best player on the court for them. If they want a Championship they need to concentrate on getting Dampier the ball inside. It broke my heart to see a great young talent in Diop have to leave so soon with such promise. Carlisle and Dampier will be a true force in the west for years to come if both of them do the work in the off season.

Who do you expect for the Mavs to get that could even compare to Dirk right now in the NBA?

Carlisle is a good coach. A nice pick up for Dallas. But this team as structured does not have the talent to win the West much less a championship. The Kidd pick up was an act of desperation. I still think Nowitski is the biggest problem. He's a heck of a basketball player but can't put the team on his back the way the best superstars do.

All this trade Dirk nonsense needs to stop!! The boy is a BEAST but he is still better when he has a point guard that can create as well as another option. People forget that Dirk is still one of the better 3pt shooters in the league...he got away from that w/ Avery. I like Avery don't get me wrong...but Dirk should not get iso plays called for him everytime down the court. I think another yr w/ J-Ho getting better as well as Jet (always seeming to get better every yr) will help!! I think Dampier is a serviceable big man but only if he dedicates himself to becoming a defensive force...blocking every shot that goes up in his area, having a mindset that the paint is HIS and he won't allow any scores inside. If he could develop a lil' 8-10 foot jumper that would be great as well! An offseason and training camp w/ Kidd will be great as well!! He may be 35 but he takes car of himself, stays in shape and is trying to become a better outside shooter. Remember this team is only 2 yrs removed from a finals appearance and a 67 win season...thing is...every other team in the west has gotten better.

Seriously? Dampier is our big hope for a championship? We might as well close up shop and trade everyone for draft picks, then, because Dampier will never--NEVER--get this team anywhere as the go-to guy. For starters, he picks up too many cheap fouls. You need your go-to guy to be available for most of the game, and Dampier isn't smart enough to keep from getting in foul trouble.
Secondly...well, have you ever watched the Mavs? Dampier is, at best, an average offensive center. And let me tell you, average is mighty generous. Most of his points, to the extent that he scores points, come on mismatches and offensive rebounds. When he's guarded by a legitimate 7-footer, he's downright terrible. He's alright defensively (though not as good as Diop), but offensively he's in the bottom half of centers in this league.
i don't know what the solution to the Mavs' problems is. I suspect that there isn't one, and we're heading toward another long period of sub-mediocrity and irrelevance, thanks in large part to that horrible Kidd trade. But if there is a solution, I GUARANTEE that Erick Dampier isn't it.
