They said the kids were so brazen they actually advertised cocaine sales and "blowouts" (no pun) over mass text messages.

Now I just want to know, what side do you guys fall on about this crime?  Because the sting has garnered praise AND dissapproval.  I think if its wrong to sell drugs in most "urban" settings, it should be equally wrong to sell them in a college setting.  I know people that have exploited the college environment for just this purpose, when I went to school in Baton Rouge, it seemed like a third of the students who came from down the road in New Orleans were there basically for a "year-long" vacation, selling drugs and other items, hustling, robbing/stealing from students, fighting, and just generally being menaces on campus.  I see this and I hope these guys/girls all get what they deserve students or no-students. What say you....?

While they busted big numbers (students) I question whether the overall "take" was worth the time and effort.  Factor in that San Diego is #2 in California for gang violence & my feeling is the police have better things to spend their time on busting students.

Having lived in SD for almost 20 years (from the late 60's to the late 80's), SDSU has always been known as a party school.  I don't honesly think this school is any worse than most of the "big" schools on the West Coast.

Do I condone drug use?  NO But exactly where do these students get their goods to sell?  (hint, the local gang bangers)

I saw this thing yesterday.......these kids were stupid enough to text each other and other students the prices and the quantities of each drug on the phone.  One of the students was a criminal justice major and asked the police if this arrest would hurt his chances of becoming a federal agent......ha!!

And bigred, that is an ignorant a$$ assumption.  They are in Cali, home several drug cartels.....hell, mexico is right there!!  Why would you assume that some college kids have to go to "gang bangers" to get drugs when there are hundreds of thousands of drug users, from all kinds of backgrounds, and the availability is so high?  Have you seen any of this activity yourself since you lived there for 20 years (in the 60's and 80's)?  It's 2008, and "gang bangers" aren't the only ones selling drugs.....c'mon man

Having went to schol there....having bee into that scence (somewhat at the time)...I truely know what I'[m talkiing about.  National City & Chula Vista & San Yisidro were all areas of heavy duty traffic (these are still the areas where most traffic is prevelant).  I could say was but the fact of the matter it still is the area for drugs (the closer you get to the border & all three cities are close).  My main pont being have the cops go more to the source & yes it is mainly the gang-bangers.  I still read the online edition of the local San Diego paper.  so, yes again I do knwo from what I speak.

So, UGA DIGGY the answer is NO it is not an ignorant assumption, however yours was.

okay bigred, whatever you said, couldn't make that much sense of it, but just because you read the online edition and you use to do a little somethin back in the day doesn't mean you know what you're talking about......the point is that you DON'T KNOW where it came from......neither do I........so again it was an IGNORANT assumption

UGA DIGGY:

Plus I also still have friends & relatives who I still talk to & those areas of the city were & still are the hotbeds of trafficing.  Back in my day, they were called the Mexican Mafia now it's gang-bangers.  The simple truth of the matter is some things do NOT change over the years.  You want drugs in my neck of the woods?  You go to Omaha & it is still north Omaha where you go for the big quantities.

The real issue is this:  should these students be "doing &/or selling"?   NO, but why permantently damage their reputationis?  Spend the time & effort to go after the  bigger guys.

What was the street  value?  $100,000 That's peanuts.  My guess is some political hack in San Diego is up for re-election & this is how he/she gets a little face time in the local media.

UGA Diggy,

that's exactly what I was thinking!  Why would majority white fraternity, tarnish their image by consulting and dealing with gangbangers in Daygo?  Gangbabngers probably would not have access to a supply so readily.  The guys were advertising like it was a walk in the park to produce.  I think they need the book thrown at them!
