One of those moves that you scratch you head at and ask "why did you go there in the first place..." I am always shocked that certain schools will get big time, after big time recruit for say RB or QB and be totally locked out of the position for years, maybe thier entire career.
See Matt Cassel QB from USC or the nine headed RB situation there as well. I do not fault the program one bit, they are trying thier best to get 5 star recruits at the same postition every year. I am just shocked at the kids who see the depth chart and think they will top it after a year in the program, etc.... Big name programs are great to get into the NFL, but I would tend to think that you have to play to reach those lofty goals.

Amen team2pass. Look at Illinois. They were a terrible program and Ron Zook still recruited top 100 players there. He ended up snagging a few and they STARTED as freshman. Some of the players were even able to make a name for themselves as freshman or sophmores. If you're not a state top 10 recruit at your position but maybe a top 20 recruit, consider going to Illinois or North Carolina or South Florida. Teams that will put you on field!

Good point. The biggest name out of HS usually receives the biggest opportunity in college. All things being equal, McCoy COULD NOT be rooted out at Texas. Seems when a lot of the big name coaches designate someone a starter, it is almost impossible for someone to take their starter spot.
Just think of the Applewhite -- Simms fiasco. That would have to drive either one a little batty, no matter what the posturing for the media says. There are few if any that would sit back and say, "yes, Coach Brown, Simms is a better QB than me, or vice versa.
Oklahoma goes through the same thing with their running backs. Get on the wrong side of coach and you can kiss your playing time adios.
With Tulsa this kid has a decent chance to be a starter, if not his first year of elgibility, the last two years. Tulsa has a good program for a small, private school. Their enrollment has to be one of the smallest in big time college football.

How many times did Applewhite bail them out? If they had let him be the starter they would have been national champs.

Everyone deserves a fair shot at playing time. I say, good for Kinne!
Now, if only we could get rid of the archaic notion of sitting out a whole year before regaining eligibility, we'd really have something.
Maybe we could have a trading system wherein scholarships could be traded quid pro quo for a player or players that would approximate equal value for both schools. Players that don't prove to be a good fit at one school could be sent to a school where they would fit better. Let's face it! Major sport college athletics are big business and should be treated as such. Scholarships are essentially player contracts worth money and could include "no trade" clauses and requirements to pass a physical before the deal is finalized.
Let's treat these players like men and as the quasi-professionals they are and move forward.

I am assuming you all are texas fans. I am really impressed about losing this guy even if he is a 4th stringer. There are many threads where the fans get mad no matter if the player were the water boy or a starter. Kinne may develop into a good qb. Look at your Curt Warners and Tony Romos. I agree about some recruits being annoted a position. That's what happened to poor Applewhite. No way Simms won that job. Joe Montana wasn't the chosen one at ND. Devine liked a kid that had an NFL body, height, and arm. Unfortunately for Devine Montana had to bail him out. It appears that is what Weis is doing now with his qb situation. Teams like Texas and Southern Cal are lucky in that there is a tremendous amount of local talent and they have taken advantage of that. Before Brown OU was more UT than UT. They are also successful so they can recruit nationally. Kinne was smart to try Texas and he is smarter to get playing time somewhere else when it didn't work out.

Why do they go there in the first place?
Because they're absolutely convinced that they're better than whoever else is there. They're big fish in their little pond and have no concept of the size of lake, or the other fish, at top tier college programs.

Simms had the better arm and should have been the better QB, heck, he went on to start in the NFL and Applewhite went on to coach in College, I think that shows where the talent was, BUT, I agree, Applewhite had an immeasurable that won ballgames.
