First, I didn't see the game, but I saw the box scores and read the article.  So, those of you who did see the game, please fill me in on the intangibles.

From the box scores, the Cubs left 20 men on base and Lieber gave up 4 home runs in one inning.

This tells me two things - 1) Lou doesn't know when to pull a pitcher and 2) Cubs hitters choke.

#1 speaks for itself and is a no-brainer  #2 happens, I believe, because of the manager.  The skipper needs to get these guys confident in hitting with men on base.  They had the same exact problems last year. Lou needs to do something different.

well, the game wasn't televised in cincinnati, but 5 of the homers were solo, and even after lieber left in the 2nd it didn't get much better.  all the Cubs did today is what the Reds have deen doing all season.  leaving people on base.

And while this is going on, the red-hot Astros are gaining ground. Lets go Zambrano time to have a meltdown and fight with teammates.

I listened to this game and in defense of Lou P, those HRs were a lot of solo shots and some were back to back. You have to have more faith in your starting pitcher to get through as many innings as possible. If the Reds batted around and Lou left Lieber in after all that, then you could say something.

Just so you know, 12 LOB by the Cubs as a team, the numbers in the box score are individual so sometimes guys get counted as left on by two batters even though they were only left on once by an individual batter.

I dont know if you can blame the manager for the lack of the Cubs clutch hitting.  Its more on the hitting coach and even more on the players themselves.  I know Cub fans think they dont hit in the clutch but  just last night they got all 3 of their runs on 2 out base hits.  If they dont get that its a Harang/Zambrano 0-0 battle.

I have seen the Reds leave runners on all year.  I couldnt find any stats on it but I am sure they Reds are in the top 3 of runners LOB.  Dusty and Lou arent out there swinging though.  The players just  dont concentrate.  It seems as though the Reds players are more interested in individual stats than doing the little things like hit behind the runner or being able to get a simple sacrifice bunt down.

I was at the game and a lot of the left on base guys were because of Volquez's pure dominance. He threw a lot of walks, but then he'd come right back and make the next guy look foolish with his change up. I'm pretty sure the Cubs got a guy to 3rd maybe once or twice in the game, so despite all the runners on base they never got close to scoring. Also, the 4 hits against Volquez were all pathetic. 3 infield singles and a bloop single to outfield. Literally, there was nothing the Cubs could do. They just got straight up destroyed.

Thanks CubsNBears, I thought that number was pretty high.  And, thanks to everyone for the highlights.  Sounds like Lou couldn't and the players wouldn't do much.

I think the Cubs gave up after the second inning. The bats can't be good all of the time. The cubs just need a solid rotation. They have enough players that they could trade for a halfway decent pitcher. Once they figure that out, the cubs offense won't have so much pressure put on them.

#1 - Lou didn't have a chance to pull Lieber that quick, he was giving up homers like batting practice.  You have to get someone up in the bullpen before you can pull a pitcher, and Lou did that and brought in Marshall for the second.  Maybe Soto could have done a better job with settling down Lieber or calling a better game.

#2 - The Cubs only left 12 men on base and only 5 in scoring postion of which 4 reached 2nd base with 2 outs, which doesn't present itself with a great oppurtunity.  No Cub even reached 3rd.  I think what you saw was an excellent pitching performance.
