this was bad to watch.the first round was ok i guess.i cant really speak on that pick because i didnt see the guy play at all last season.but in the second round with the top 2 recievers in the draft still available, and pass on them was a really bad mistake.i think they should have went after jackson from cal.he was working with jerry rice on his off time and getting it done.if jerry says the kid has alot to offer, than you get him.now we have to look at Isaac Bruce and Bryant Johnson to be our saviors.not only did we need one reciever,we needed two.the lineman could have came later.

than in the later rounds where Colt Brennan and Matt Flynn and a couple of other qbs were available,we didnt even take a look.what if Alex Smith aint our guy?i think hes not.what if he even gets hurt?who do we go to???weinke???dilfer is gone and even if he was here that would be a problem!

we have holes that we need to fill.....true.....but our defense will be good as is.we didnt need to take that corner in the third round.draft your o lineman there and you couldve taken jackson in the second.our defense is ok.if we could build a offense that martz can work with, than better defense will follow.

but no.we took more fliers on more guys that we know nothing about.is al davis running this team too???whats going on?did the forty niners forget about our traditional offense?does mike nolan need to go????

Our defense be good as it is?  Are you HIGH?!?  Our defense was average last year and we lost two of our best defensive players to free agency and retirement.  I'm not completely sold on Balmer but it was a need pick.  We really had no choice but to draft a defensive lineman in the draft and he just happended to be the best one on the board at the time.   Not drafting a quarterback was one of the smartest moves in the draft, Colt Brennan is a piece of garbage.  Chris is gone and therefore Shaun Hill and Alex Smith are competing for a starting job.  Martz will turn one of them into a solid quaterback, just watch.  I slightly agree with skipping a WR in the second round though, actually up until I heard that Martz endorsed the pick I was pretty riled up that we skipped on DeSean Jackson. But it would take Jackson at least two years to fit comfortably in our offense, quite frankly Nolan doesn't have that kind of time he needs to win now.  Also with that pick we did need help at offensive line and Chilo Rachal looks like he will boost our offensive line considerably.    The "corner" taken in the third was a 6-1 near 200 pound defensive back who can play corner or safety.  Before dissing the pick look at the secondary, Walt Harris only has a few years left, Mark Roman is a civilian in a 9er jersey, we needed an upgrade plus depth at this position and from what I've heard about him he's a big addition.  Actually I'm debating if he'll be a bigger defensive impact than Balmer. The fourth round pick will also add depth to our offensive line that will hopefully block for Smith or Hill.

Another issue I have with your stance is you're implying Bryant Johnson or Isaac Bruce needs to step up, well what about Jason Hill, who I think could explode this year into a 600+ yard receiver, Arnaz Battle, who consistently plays well and will probably turn his game up another notch in Martz new offense, or Ashlie Lelie, who may not be amazing but may find a niche in Martz pass friendly offense.  And that's not even including Vernon Davis, who is going to have an explosive year and will give opposing defenses headaches trying to stop him.  Any of these guys could step up and become a premier WR for us.  While we probably could've used a WR based on the board it wasn't feasible with all of our other needs.

Bottom line this wasn't an amazing draft, but we didn't have alot of picks and had far too many needs.  I'm hoping the 9ers pick up some interesting new free agents before the season starts and upgrade a few of the positions or at least add depth so that we can compete on both sides of the ball.

I would have much rather have Mike Pollack in the second round that Rachal. He can play either Guard spot or Center. I think he will develop into a better lineman.

I also would have much rather have Early Doucet than Reggie Smith. Yes we all know Walt Harris can't go on forever, but Shawnte Spencer (who I think is a perfectly capable #2 CB) and Tarrel Brown, who is developing nicely, are right there (if Smith will indeed play CB.)

If Smith will play at Safety, he will have to compete with not with Mark Roman, who I believe will be demoted back to 2nd string, but rather with Dashon Goldson. He improved well as last season went on. I believe he will be our other starting safety and Roman is more than capable of being a #2. Smith has nowhere to play. I believe he will not be better than Goldson.

All of this speculation aside, this draft was mediocre, brdering on bad. Smith is probably our best player drafted, but in our loaded secondary, he will see no time, even after Walt harris leaves.

Balmer was a good pick. I don't think he is a one-year wonder. The rest of the draft was trash or wasted. We needed another WR since Bruce is ancient, B. Johnson has never been higher than a #3 WR, Battle is BEST suited as a #3 WR, Lelie is washed up at 29 years old, and I don't think Hill will develop. He is a "track star" playing football. We could have had John David Booty or Dennis Dixon as well to push Smith and Hill should one of them not work out or get injured. Instead we are now stuck with O'Sullivan.

This draft grade C-

I am not going to talk about the draft anymore.  Don't knock the defense.  They were on the field a majority of the game, week in and week out.  If we can get our defense off the field and give them some rest we will have an awesome defense.

In all honesty, there is about 50 players who may have a chance of actually getting past Anquan Boldin and Larry Fitzgerald at WR. And I'm not just talking about the present.

The likes of Lynn Swann, Jerry Rice, Michael Irvin, Don Hutson, you know all the stars of the yesteryear would probably get in there, and present day stars such as Randy Moss, Terrell Owens and Braylon Edwards would be hard pushed to get there before those 2.

Either way I bet very few of us would get higher than No.3 on the Cardinals depth chart at WR.

Our draft wasn't really that bad.

It was more of a need draft than best player available. We filled a gaping need on the D-Line by drafting Kentwan Balmer. We also filled a huge need inside by taking Chilo Rachal, who has drawn comparisons to our own Larry Allen apparently, but if they're true, then I'll be damned but we might have just landed ourselves a future Hall of Famer. Then we take Reggie Smith to help our secondary that got picked apart because we couldn't get a pass rush. Smith can play either free safety or corner, so could take Mark Roman's spot. It wouldn't surprise me if we moved Dashon Goldson over to the strong safety spot or vice versa.

Then we take Cody Wallace to upgrade our O-Line in the middle.

Then we take Josh Morgan, who may be one of those guys that just appears from nowhere.

and who was the other guy? Larry Grant or something? He could upgrade our D to some extent.

Street Sinatra, no offense, but you need to study up a bit more on your football knowledge.  If the game was just about flash and splash, then the early 49ers, the Patriots, and every other dynasty would not have been winning championships.  Teams are built with heart, depth, and especially the line of scrimmage.  We took chances last year in the draft...a stud athletic linebacker, trading up for what we thought was possibly the best OL in the draft, Jason Hill, etc...  We didn't fortify our team too much last year.  We need line help.  We've spent money on good skill player positions...Bryant Johnson  (who is a 'stretch player Mike Martz loves), Isaac Bruce (perfect possession receiver for Martz) a VERY good #2 running back, a stud (but older) DL in Smith.  The year before we bought the best DB available, signed other free agents with the hopes of getting better.  We've gone for skill player guys.  This draft was the perfect compliment to what we've been doing.

If our offense controls the ball (just as Norv Turner's offense did for us), then our defense will have a chance to play at an elite level.  We need a pass rush and with all our injured players back (especially lawson) and our new draft pick to help fortify the line, we're right where we need to be right now.

Please be educated before slamming a team you supposedly root for.  We did good...not great mind you...but it was what we had to be.  And our 7th round pick, the LB from Ohio State, is perhaps one of the best value picks of the draft.  Watch him develop.  Awesome on Special Teams and possibly some needed depth at LB.
