Okay Bears fans! I'm watching Sports Page on CLTV, and they started discussing Brian Urlacher and his contract dispute. Mike North from The Score thinks that Urlacher (note: he has hated him for years) is being coddled by the Chicago media. Scoop Jackson from ESPN agreed with him and said that it's a race issue because the media ripped Lance Briggs apart last year. They both feel that since Urlacher is white, he is given more "slack" by the Chicago media.

First off, I don't see how Urlacher is being coddled by the media. Everytime I read the paper, it seems like they are calling him a selfish crybaby. In fact, I seem to remember more people in the media brushing aside the Lamborghini incident than what Urlacher has gone through with the contract stuff.

What do you guys think of this?

Tread carefully. I'm a firm believer that the race card is played far too often when it's not really applicable. Briggs was treated badly when he had more cause to complain the Urlacher. I can't think of a single NFL player who liked being franchised. Urlacher knows that time is catching up with him. He is getting hurt more frequently each season. But he is still a freak on the field. Is probably the best cover 2 inside linebacker in history. His contract was frontloaded with bonus and he wants to renegotiate while he still has value. Also I think he sees the Bears sliding down in an increasingly tough contract and wants out for that reason as much as the money. I watch Jim Rome everyday as well as several other ESPN talk shows and I don't think he is being coddled. And Scoop Jackson saying he is doesn't help. Sometimes I think Scoop thinks Artest was railroaded and OJ was screwed because they were black. Now racism does exist and is everywhere in subversive, subtle ways. But you can't cry wolf every time a black man gets in trouble and a white man does too. Who does America think less of RIGHT NOW, Barry Bonds OR Roger Clemens?

Brian Urlacher and Peyton Manning are two of the key "faces" of the NFL.

Urlacher and his contract is BS, but at the same time if i could demand a raise and i knew that the owner would either pay or another shop woul, i would go in tomorrow and ask for one.

Lance Briggs did a lot that was really BS.  I havent heard Urlacher demand a trade or say anything about never playing with the Bears ever again.

Lance wrecked and ditched a Lambo and scoffed at the law by finding a way around getting a DUI and getting a suspension.

Many players are unhappy with their contracts but you never hear of them.   Urlacher could have handled his situation behind closed doors, the way that he did it just puts some more pressure on the Bears brass.

Well as an African-American myself I would say it has nothing to do with race in this situation. I grow weary of that card being played. It's becoming a crutch for my people way too often (Hey Al Sharpton...I'm looking at you). But without diving into that type of conversation these two instances are different.

The truth of the matter Brian Urlacher has kept this under wraps. Only the media truly brought it to the light. Urlacher hasn't used the media to voice his disputes in regards to his contract to the level Lance Briggs did when he spoke poorly of the organization and vowed to never play for them again. Urlacher has went the complete opposite direction saying he will never want to go anywhere else and he doesn't think the organization wants him too neither, etc.

Good post nolovie.

Brian Urlacher and Peyton Manning are two of the key "faces" of the NFL.

It looks like you subtly answered the question here, but I'll ask again anyway. Do you, nolovie, think Brian Urlacher is coddled by the media because he is white? That is what both Scoop Jackson and Mike "dumba$$" North said on Sports Page tonight. It should be noted that North has hated Urlacher since he got drafted. I think he just hates him because Dan McNeil (ESPN 1000) is a big fan of him, and they both had a big falling out.

Urlacher could have handled his situation behind closed doors, the way that he did it just puts some more pressure on the Bears brass.

I agree. The situation being brought into the public was terrible, but was it done by Urlacher? I really think his fleet of agents are the ones making this bigger than it really is. Have you noticed that since Urlacher silenced those trade/retirement rumors, statements from his agents have died down.

First of all NO WISE MAN LISTENS TO CHICAGO MEDIA... you just hear them and laugh at what they say b/c its complete B.S.

Urlacher isn't crying about anything, this is they guy that would cut his pay check just to keep Briggs on the same team.  Is Briggs willing to do that for Urlacher? F**K no.
Race has nothing to do with this.

The media loves Urlacher and they hate Grossman.  Both are white.

The media loves Payton and hates Benson.  Both are black.

This has nothing to do with race at all.  It's just a matter of how the players go about voicing out their issues.

Frankly, the use and abuse of the race card is very disrespectful to Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King, and all the other black men and women in history who were lynched and burned for the color of their skin.  The race card should only be used if the case truly warrants it.  Otherwise, this is just sensationalism and meant to sell advertising.

Do you, nolovie, think Brian Urlacher is coddled by the media because he is white?

No, i dont think he is "coddled" by the media because he is white.

I also dont think that he is "coddled" at all.

I dont think that Peyton Manning is "coddled" either.

In fact, even though these two are "faces" of the NFL the media is extra hard on them.  They know that if they dog either of them, it will get a rise from fans and sell papers.  Peyton used to get dogged on constantly about choking in the Playoffs and his career will always have a "Yeah, but" after it.

I can remember Urlacher making every sports writers (it seemed like it) most over rated players list.   They would say that he didnt even lead the NFL in tackles and blah blah blah.  Yet when you look at how the Bears did a few years ago without him while he was injured, well, they win with him and sucked without him.

The writers will make you think he is over rated.  Listen to his teammates and they say that he is the guy that runs down plays and if it werent for him instead of it being a TD it was a 20 yard gain.

These idiots say what they think will sell papers or get listeners.  Like Howard Stern or Mancow.  If you dont have anything intelligent to talk about, start some controversy.
