Did Durant make his team better? No. Did Al Horford? Yes. The Hawks would not be in the playoffs without Horford. He is a double double machine. He definitely got snubbed.

I agree 100% the Rookie of the Year is supposed to come in to his first season and make his team better. Kevin Durant didn't do that and Al Horford did. Therefore, Al Horford is the real Rookie of the Year.

The problem here is that it's a little difficult to improve a team when the only two all-star caliber players (Lewis and Allen) are traded away. After that, any veteran talent that had managed to find its way to Seattle's roster and succeed was traded away (West, Sczerbiak, Thomas, etc...). It's a lot easier to have a team improve when when the front office is trying to win games THIS season rather than three years down the road in OKC.

beefdog makes a good argument. id love to see the sonics without allen, lewis, and durant. i wonder how much success horford and ATL woulda had if ATl had traded Joe Johnson and Josh Smith before this season, and didnt make the trade for Mike Bibby...

What a myopic argument. Did Durant make his team better? Hell yes. What would they have done without him? Did Horford? Sure, but his team was already stacked and still managed to loses 8 more games than they won.
BTW, a "double double machine" should probably at least average a double-double, right? Horford was close, but no way does close qualify as a "machine". LOL!

im pretty sure if Durant played for Atlanta they would have made it to the playoffs as a 6th or 7th seed and if Horford played in Seattle they would have a worse record then they have now

To say that Kevin Durant did not make his team better is ridiculous. Without Kevin Durant, the sonics MAYBE realistically have a shot at 10 wins. While I agree Horford played a key role in getting the Hawks to the Playoff, and it's arguable that he had a better, more well rounded season statistically, it is unfair to say Kevin Durant did not deserve the award. Night in and Night out he was the best player on the Sonics, and on nights when he did not play well, the Sonics loss.

Homers and others, WAKE UP!!!
Horford had Joe Johnson, Josh Smith, Mike Bibby, Marvin Williams, need I go on? That team should have been making the playoffs without Horford!!
Durant had Jeff Green and Chris Wilcox and you honestly try to compare that with the Hawks. Get real. Durant's 19, he puts up better numbers, is expected to the LEADER of the sonics, and has the opposing teams best the defensive player on him every night. Sorry Horford loves, the ROY was won by the right guy.

Although Bibby wasn't on that team before Horford, that team still should have been making the playoffs. They had the talent to do it.

I agree, people who say Al Horford should be ROY are real homers. Just because your boy happens to drafted by a team that was lucky enough to make the 8th seed in the pathetic Eastern Conference doesn't mean he deserves the to be ROY. Besides, people don't cast their ROY votes based on the same criteria as the MVP award. The player with the strongest performance in his rookie year wins the hardware. It's just that simple.

Put Horford on the Sonics instead of Durant, and they win about 10 games this season. Put Durant on the Hawks, they're about the same or better.

Horford didn't make his team that much better when you have Joe Johnson and Josh Smith he was just another player that helped put them over the Hump. Now put the players on the opposite teams .... Horford on the Sonics , the sonics would have done even worst then they did with Durant for Horford is not the type of player to lead his team and in Seattle he would of been force to be the man and I don't believe he could be the man, on Atlanta Horford was able to play a role and fit the role perfectly , even if Horford wasn't on the Hawks and it was another one of the top 15 rookies the Hawks would of still made the play-offs because of Smith and Johnson.
Durant had to be the leader on a team that had no one. Seattle traded everyone of thier starters away and left Durant all by himself to carry the load , many rookies would have folded under the pressure of carring a NBA team but he still did quite well. (He is no LeBron James though)
Next year Seattle needs to get some decent players in there and Durant will be able to shine even more.
Don't get me wrong Horford is a nice player and I like him alot, but the voters got this one right by giving Durant the ROY.

sorry guys, but I dont think the qualifications for the award are that you make your team better. That is debatable. Who is say that without Durant the Sonics wouldnt have won a single game? You take him away and they are a D league team. Al had a great season, but Durant was better and deserving of this award.

Who really cares about the Rookie of the Year anyhow? Or the MVP for that matter, it's a popularity contest for the most part anyhow. Durant scored more points but it was because he was about the only guy that could score on that team where as Horford did more of the other things like rebound to help his team out. Should the NBA have a Defensive ROY award? If so then it would probably be someone else. Kobe will probably win the MVP award because LA made a trade midseason that made him win more games, without the trade Kobe would be home explaining his stay in Colorado to his ignorant wife. Like I said, who really cares.
