A lot of people are suggesting that the Packers made mistakes taking guys that we could have taken later in the draft, most notably Jordy Nelson. If you are one of these people can you answer this for me...

If, hypothetically, you were guaranteed of taking Jordy Nelson in, lets say, the 3rd round, is it better to draft someone you don't really want and have to pay him 2nd round money compared to 3rd round money while the guy you do actually want gets only the 3rd round pay day. Keep in mind that if you trade or release the 2nd rounder you take a hit for the bonuses you paid him.

I think that the Jordy Nelson was the worst pick that the Packers made yesterday not that I think he is a bad player and I do believe that he will be a good football player but the timing of the pick just seemed really high for a position we really didn't need since we are so deep at the WR position.

If we guaranteed that we could have gotten Jordy Nelson I would have let him slip to the 3rd round and gone after a position more of need. If it was my choice on who we drafted with the 36th pick I would have drafted Fred Davis from USC, we need another TE besides Donald Lee

I understand your point, but I agree with cappy. There were other needs for the Packers that were much more pressing than WR. I am simply speculating but I think the Pack got burned by trading down and then settled.

I wanted to see a top end CB or TE come with our first pick and Dustin Keller and Brandon Flowers both came off the board because we traded down. I know that Ted Turner may have something else in mind but I do not think that he will be able to match the talent of either of those players at their positions for the rest of the draft.

Moving out of the 1st round was a good idea if there was nobody left that could fill a void for us immediately.  My big beef is that we grabbed another receiver with our first pick that we did not need.  Just like last year, we had plenty of young talent on the D line and we grabbed Harrell.  I think TT falls in love with one guy and makes sure he gets them even if he has to pull the trigger way to early like the past 2 years.  No moves offseason to help us now.  We pick a WR with our first pick but TT was to damn stubborn and cheap to give up a 3rd or 4th last year for Moss?  Also with a new QB starting wouldn't you think that we would get a veteran to come in if something happens to Rodgers?  Or even get a veteran running back to take the pressure off Rodgers?  With Favre gone we need to give him a chance to succeed.  If that means double tight ends with a bruising fullback and pound the rock, then do it.  Isn't that how we won the Superbowl in 96'?  OK, i got off track a little from the initial question.  The point is that we were under the salary cap with Favre and now we have a ton of room to make this team better but nothing???

Oz, you and I look at things different, and that's okay. Here's my take...

TT says he drafts the best player available. So, maybe sometimes trading down makes sense. That's cool. Yesterday there were certainly better players available with our first round pick. Plus they fit needs more so. Brandon Flowers was, imo, expected to be our pick. But, snap, he was off the board just a bit to soon. What now, what now??? UHHHH, a WR???

Now, that said. Is the pick of the paticular player bad? I don't know. No one does yet. My problem is we need other things worse, and there were better players available at our orignal pick, and the spot we picked. I don't mind the Brian Brohm pick so much. But if Aaron Rodgers gets hurt early on,  what do we have? A rookie who won't even have the system down yet? I don't like the thinking.

As for you second part. If TT thought the guy was third round talent, he would not have drafted him then. We know TT drafts the best player available, not for the guy.

Hey DLP, Good to see you. I was confused by the Packers 1st selection as well but I am not going to question TT. I said last year that I would trust his decision making and it worked out with the kickers. I really don't think Nelson would have lasted until the 3rd round but who knows. I do agree we had other issues that should have been addressed but we aren't in the Packer camp either. Should be interesting today as well...bluejay

The Nelson pick was a good one, and so was the Brohm pick.  The pick for Patrick Lee sucked.  This guy has a list of negatives a mile long.

You too Bluejay! Been to long. He may not have made it to the third, and like I said, I just think we should have gone elsewhere...

GBA, I agree fully on Lee.

All our picks so far have been really solid. Jordy Nelson would have been picked in the next 10 picks anyways. He is not a 3rd round talent. CBS had a article on him right before the draft, everyone should read it.

And for those that are questioning our picks: Its fine if you feel the Packers should have done this or picked this guy. But remember you have very limited knowledge. Have you checked out Robinson's knees? Do you know for sure the Packers don't need a WR? Have you scouted these players and watched hours of tape on them?

On paper some things may look odd but its just on paper. Its looks like we have 5 solid WR's but maybe we don't.
