25donutz, it is not a stupid question. The reason the Rockets had home court advantage was because they had a better record than the Jazz. The Jazz won their division and that is why they get the 4th seed in spite of Houston having a better record.
The complicating factor was that the whole thing was thrown off because New Orleans and San Antonio are co-champions technically of their division which pushes San Antonio to the 3 seed instead of Utah. The Spurs and Hornets split their head to head games, had the same division record and same overall record, which means neither of them had a tie breaker over the other. Had the Spurs and Hornets not finished with the same record or had a tie breaker, the Jazz would have been the 3 as the other division champ and would have played Phoenix, who ironically enough would have had homecourt advantage over them as well. By default the runner up of the Southwest would have fell to 4 and hosted the Rockets at 5. That is how crazy the west was this year.
The NBA changed the rules to have the team with the better record have home court advantage regardless of seeding and that is why Houston had homecourt advantage.
