Why hire Scott Skiles ? , his routine didnt work in Phoenix or Chicago , why are we to think it will fly in Milwalkee ? . He still doesnt get it , the psychology of the game has changed . That Bob Knight mentality was feasible 20 years ago , trying to apply that now will cause problems ( see LATRELL SPREWELL ) .
I completely disagree. Have you heard of Gregg Popovich or Jerry Sloan? To say that no "drill sargeant" coaches win is untrue. Scott Skiles' routine didn't work in Phoenix or Chicago? He turned a moribund franchise in the Bulls into an elite team. 3 of his 4 years they went to the playoffs, including last season when they eliminated defending champion Miami.
How do you mean "his routine didn't work in Phoenix or Chicago"? He got his teams to the playoffs. At this point that is what the Bucks are desperate for. Is Skiles a long term fit, no. Guys like Skiles are never long term fits. They come in, kick some ass, and produce results almost immediately because the teams that hire them are desparate for someone to hold players feet to the fire, not hold their hand. However after success comes for a couple of years, players feel like they are entitled to some kid glove treatment. At that point, Skiles routine will become obsolete. If his term with Milwaukee runs similar to his time with Chicago (and I think that it easily could) than I think most Bucks fans would be happy. I know Herb Kohl would be.
As a Bulls fan,I'll let you know now that this was a good hire. What went wrong with the Bulls this year had nothing to do with Scott Skiles and everything to do with....
A) The trade rumors swirling around with everyone mentioned as trade bait for Kobe Bryant. This should have stayed a secret.
B) The Bulls have a few lazy players that won't play hard for anyone, including Ben Gordon, Chris Duhon, and Tyrus Thomas (Thomas might not be as lazy as he is dumb).
C) Ben Wallace was a locker room cancer who thought it prudent to argue with everything that was done, and then went out on the court and showed no interest in hustling although that's the only reason he was brought in for.
D) Kirk Hinrich got married and decided for himself that spending time with his new wife was more important than going to the next level as a PG. He was real close to becoming a perenial all star, and now he probably won't be a starter anymore. I guess that's his choice to make.
I don't think any coach could have done anything in this situation. Skiles got them to play above their heads and he'll do the same for the Bucks.
The Bucks don't need a drill sergant but they do need a more disciplined offense and some kind of defensive accountability. Skiles may be able to impose this.
If they are going to run...they should draft Kevin Love and put him at PF (thus moving Charlie Villanueva to start at SF and Mason to back up M. Redd at SG). If they are going to be a half-court shooting team they will draft Eric Gordon
Ideally i think Skiles would want O.J. Mayo because he has the potential to be the type of point guard Skiles was. Although id doubt he would fall to 7. They would need to get lucky in the lottery to get him.
I dont think Mikwaukee has money to sign big name FA after signing Mo Williams and Michael Redd to new contracts.
This was a good hire. I know that he is no nonsense guy and that may rub some people the wrong way, but the fact is his teams won with defense. If the players care about winning and not only money, they should welcome him in. If they don't, then they can go away.
Are you kidding me? This will "cause problems." What team did you watch this year.? Undisciplined, lazy, selfish, yea the players' coach approach really worked. If I am Skiles, I come in and be the biggest jerk around. It can't get any worse than what they've had these past few years. I may have concerns with the drill sargeant mentality, but I am up for anyting right now. If blowing the team up is not an option, this seems like the next best thing.
Skiles will be fine. A coach like him is brought in to change the culture, to send the message that players will be held accountable for their effort. When you haven't gotten it done with the players' coach approach, you need to go the other way. Once Skiles' welcome wears out with the players, the Bucks will want to get someone who doesn't try to be the tough guy.
Also, you can't use the Sprewell incident to argue that the drill sergeant routine won't work. NO ONE could coach Latrell Sprewell. Carlesimo's problem, at least in Portland, if not in GS, was that he couldn't relate to established, veteran professional players. He was too used to dealing with college kids. After some time watching Greg Popovich, it appears that Carlesimo is doing better with the Seattle/Oklahoma City Sonics.
Obviously the person who made this thread knows nothing about sports let alone basketball. Scott Skiles demands the players to play each play and isn't afraid to sit anyone on the team.
This doesn't make him a drill sergeant but rather a good coach. He made the playoffs in Phoenix two out of his three years and three out of his four in Chicago.
It unfortunate that trade rumors and players becoming complacent made him look like a bad guy. I think this is a good signing for both Skiles and the Bucks.
A four year deal is good but I think after the four years no matter what he does with this young team he won't be around after that. I see him as a guy to get the young guys in line and turn them around. If they get a good draft the next two years I could see them making a bid for the playoffs in Skiles third year as coach. Lets face it if the Atlanta Hawks can make it as an 8 seed anyone in the East can make a run to the playoffs at a given year.
I wish Skiles the best and hopefully I'm wrong when it comes to the future with the team after his four year deal runs out. He is a classy guy and deserves to get a long term deal.
