New York should be a prime location for coaches. If they are successful, and I think every good coach expects to succeed, they are practically deified. Look at Torre. And, if they fail, they can always blame it on the media and generally have raised their stock to the point that they can get another job. I'm thinking of guys like Buck Showalter and Bobby Valentine. So, New York teams don't have to generally settle when they are looking for coaches - and rarely get their offers turned down. Well, Belichick basically turned the Jets down, but he's just evil. All this being said, is Thomas the worst New York coach ever? Worse than Kotite? Worse than Torberg? Worse than Herm Edwards? I think he is easilly the worst, and it is amazing that he kept the job as long as he did.

It's a tough call between Isiah, Rich Kotite and Bruce Coslet. And don't forget Joe Torre, Mets edition.

There were worse coaches, but usually the teams were smart enough to fire them immediatly. Isiah Thomas sticks out because he was somehow able to trick the Knicks into keeping him on board
A quick list of other crappy NY coaches off the top of my head:
Rich Kotite
"Joe must Go!!"
Ray Handley
Lou Holtz
Dallas Green (Mets and Yankees)
Billy Martin - just kidding of course, but what other coach has ever been fired from the same team five times??
Casey Stengel - again, just kidding, but he does hold the record for most losses, and he coached the worst ever team, the '62 Mets

Doctor Monkey has it right. Great post. Isiah Thomas is the worst New York coach to keep his job so long. He is amazing on how he kept his job that long. In business, people are fired in a New York minute for mistakes and not meeting goals. Never has one coach been given so much and so many chances and not succeeded. Isiah said it is me or Larry Brown. They got rid of Larry Brown after one year. Isiah talked all season about New York Knicks as a championship team. He took the old Soviet Union approach of telling people a big lie long enough and often enough, people will believe - well at least Dolan believed. Losing so many games, trading for over-paid players, drafting people no one has heard of - seems like enough reasons not to have your job or to be let go in a reduction is force move. Add a lawsuit which he loses for sexual harassment - which alone is a reason to get rid of an employee. Isiah needs to sell life insurance as his next job. They seem to need people to do that all the time.

As bad as Isaiah is, I think the blame here lies in one place, and one palce only. The owner. To not only hire Isiah but also give him personel control is ludicrous. Knick fans better pray that the James Dolan lets Donnie Walsh truly run the show and bring in his own choice and run the team as he sees fit. Otherwise the Knicks will alway wade in mediocrity. What they really need is a new owner, not just a coach.

All ownership, at a minimum, care about overall profitability. Some care more about winning like Mark Cuban, for example, however, a winning program usually brings commercial success. The Knicks have suffered from incompetent from top to bottom, and incompetent begets incompetence as we all know. Whoever thought that Isaiah Thomas was suitable for the positions he has held obviously is incompetent. They need changes in every aspect of the organization and they are off to a good start. Next, Marbury has to go. In fact one on the roaster should be traded for whatever pocket change they might be able to fetch.

IF Isiah Thomas "didn't" make those trades and drafted those players, he would have an excuse. BUT since he did and couldn't win with them with himself as coach, he gets all the blame. Since many of the players on the Knicks roster are overpaid, it's going to hard to move them to free up cap space and/or get better players.
At least when Pat Riley took over the coaching duties with the Heat, they won the championship with the players he assembled. Of course the next (this) year it all fell apart because they couldn't keep their younger role players and couldn't move/cut their aging highly paid players. That being said, the Heat will rebuild in less time than the Knicks.
It's going to take the Knicks years to draft the players they need to 'contend' for the championship and rebuild the culture of winning. Have to get rid of all the "ME" players and find some willing to share the load (Team oriented players) and accept defined roles in the system. Isiah looked at the talent side only, but forgot what it takes to build and play winning basketball. He was trying to fit square pegs into round holes and call it a team. It just wasn't possible with the type of players he assembled.
Hard lessons all around and the Knicks and their fans paid the price.

Excelsior,
Great post. Really enjoyed y our thought on the manner. I agree with everything except for the Marbury thing. He has 1 year left on his contract and then he is a unrestricted free agent. Unless the Knicks can talk the Heat or Cavs into trading for Lebron or Wade with that expiring contract, you ride out the season next year with marbury, who should be motivated for 2 reasons. 1, he hated isiah and will be so happy he is gone. And 2, he will be playing for his last contract in the NBA which he will need to put food on the table for his family.
But I really think the Knicks should just go into next season with relatively the same team, whatever draft choice they make and a new coach with a new attitude.
Maybe they can start playing defense on a regular basis and show us fans here in NY that they care about competing even if they don't win. The Knicks fans really are the smartest fans in the NBA and would rather see them try 100% every night and try to play defense and if they lose, so be it, then not hustle, play defense and just not care at all. In time this will all get better and the Knicks will finally be back to respectability in the NBA which is imperative to the league.

Billy Martin - just kidding of course, but what other coach has ever been fired from the same team five times??What coach has ever been hired by the same team / owner five times? Billy knew one approach to managing that would bring a team up from the bottom and destroy a team that had arrived at the top. He was a victim five times of his own success.
