So the Mariners designated Charlton Jimerson for assignment today. Giving them 10 days to trade him, place him on waivers, or release him. I don't understand, or particularly like this move. Jimerson worked his butt off to make the squad and gives us some speed off the bench that we need. On top of that he's got a great story about how hard he's worked just to get to where he is. If something has to happen, I hope we make a trade for him, because losing this guy and getting nothing in return would be a bummer.

We gave up some speed but picked up a Hot Bat in Norton. Remember, you have to get on Base before you can steal a Base. We need the Bat more than the Speed at the moment................................By the way, why do you have my Girlfriend in your Avatar?

I know it is bad to lose Charlton Jimerson without having something in return, but I just didn’t see how he could fit with this team. He didn’t have the best of spring training and McLaren wasn’t planning to give him enough playing time for him to be comfortable, so this can be good in the long haul. Let’s just hope he doesn’t go for anything.

Woopigsooie,
Love the avatar comment (except I often think it is my wife!). Jimerson is a tough call. My opinion is that we would have been wise to give him two more weeks. But at what cost. If Norton can move the runners on base, there is less pressure to run.
Weak argument, but it is what it is...

It doesn't matter who we have on the bench, none of them see any playing time.

I have never understood how a guy with 7 years of minor league experience creates such excitement as a "prospect" as this guy. He failed in 2 tries at Houston, and doesn't really hit at the Major League level. Sure he has speed and some pop, assuming he makes contact, but this is a very minor move that was obviously gonna happen.

Jimerson is a nice story but a AAAA player. I'm more disturbed to see Greg Norton on a major league roster than to see Jimerson go, but it goes to show desperate times indeed call for desperate measures.
Greg Norton? Seriously? Is Ken Phelps hanging out in a downtown Starbucks? Maybe we could bring the NBA's 10 day contract rule in and start a run on these guys. Too bad Lloyd McClendon is taking some time off......
If we could get a couple of hitters like Wilkerson and Vidro off the bench, it would help. Of course, that means we'd have to have major league players starting in their positions, and we're kind of all out of those right now.

What is wrong with Norton? I though he should have been on the team out of spring training...he is the best PH in baseball right now....certainly more important than Miguel Cairo...why is he so important? Also, why hasn't Bloomquist seen the field at all....doesn't make sense to me. The way they use the players they may as well have 13 pitchers on the roster....

My issue with Norton is he is a 34 year old never-was career .252 hitter with little power who is taking up a roster spot on a team that can't afford the luxury of carrying a mediocre stick, can't field, full-time pinch-hitter. I mean, we already have Vidro, but he plays every day..... In my opinion Norton isn't a terrible guy to have buried at the end of a national league bench, but is a lousy fit on this team.
The best PH in baseball right now? Downright scary claim, considering his career includes:
.196 hitter at Safeco
.209 with RISP & 2 outs
.216 in tie games
.217 late in close games
.225 against left handers (so much for the switch-hitter advantage)
Strange statistical anomaly: His BA actually goes up with each run as the score gap increases. In other words, he's a .262 hitter when there's a 5 or more run difference, but a .225 hitter in one run games. I've never seen a hitter who performs progressively worse across the board as games get closer. There must be others out there, but I've never noticed it.
BTW, I haven't figured out why they signed Cairo either. Maybe he's got pictures of Bavasi with the Mariner Moose......

I still think the M's should have shelled out the money to try and land either Torrii Hunter or Aaron Rowand. They knew they were going to make a move for Bedard and that Jones was going to be a big part of that deal. We get one of those guys in Center and move Ichiro back to RF and our defense and offense would be vastly improved. Of course the defense couldn't get any worse then what I saw from Morse the other day. It would have been comical if it were a guy on another team.
Back to the Hunter/Rowand thing. I know guys have to want to come to the team too and it isn't just about money and I know Hunter might have wanted to play for the Angels, but you can't tell me Rowand would have rather played for SF instead of Seattle.
