What? Yankee fans are upset over that number? O'Neil wasn't that good. If so, then every mediocre Yankee number should be retired - although they are have alot of old, way past their prime guys on the team that should be retired right now. Yankees are going down

You are right his stats do not make him a canidate for his number being retired, but he was the backbone of that team
You give that number to someone who will be a great Yankee for years and years to come
not a journyman reliever

LOL Scott-24 that was good, the Yankees are going down? hmm i don 't think so, not trading for Johan Santana this off season and keeping their 3 very promising young pitchers Phil Hughes (21 years old), Joba Chamberlain (22 years old) and Ian Kennedy (23 years old) showed they are commited to building with young guys. They still don't have many young hitters in the lineup tho but that is ok because their bats are still in their prime and by the time they are out of it im sure they'll have some promising young prospects to hit the baseball.

are you kidding..
as fgor this team..it doesnt have many guys on the offensive side in there prime other than arod or cano..melky is a 4th outfielder, jeter ,damon, giambi, matsui and abreu are all past there primes..as is pettite the cheat and mussina..
kennedy profiles as a back of the roation guy..his stuff is average at best
i think hughes is going to be very good and joba..who knows if he can start..they have a ton of question marks for a 200 million dollar payroll

I am a Yankee fan and I don't understand it either. Paul gave us some great years, was a leader in the clubhouse and was clutch in the postseason, but he wasn't one of the great Yankees and his numbers should not be retired.

Scott-24,
LaTroy Hawkins taking Paul O'Neill's number would be equal to Eric Gagne taking Jason Varitek's number (if Varitek were retired). Jason Varitek doesn't have great numbers, but he is the heart of the Red Sox. I somehow believe that the Boston fans would be a bit pissy (to state it mildly) if a reliever like Gagne or dare I say Keith Foulke took the #33. Just as Red Sox fans hold Jason Varitek in high esteem as their team's Captain, the Yankees fans hold Paul O'Neill in high esteem for being the Warrior and the Heart of the late 1990s Yankees Dynasty.

First the stupid time-waste that was the Boston jersey under the stadium thing, now this giant dump of a non-story.
Yankees fans are obsessed with shirts, apparently; that doesn't make this interesting. Move on, media.

Are you that clueless or just know nothing about baseball. O`Neill was an excellent player for the Yankees. Just because he didn`t put up huge fantasy numbers doesn`t mean he wasn`t that good of a player. If you watched him everyday, he always gave 110% and was also a clutch player. I assume from your comments that Jeter is not that good either.

give me a break! O'Neil was a solid player, but he's not even close to an all time great or a HOFer. He didn't even come up in the organization for crying out loud! Yankee fans should worry more about your teams mediocre start and Giambi hitting .0whatever instead of living in the past.

I think everyone here is missing the point. The story isn't about how amazing of a talent Paul Oneill was. He clearly is not a HOFer. BUT, for any yankee fan that is in their mid-20s and on, Paul Oneill is remembered as one of the most beloved Yankees. It wasn't about the mediocre stats he put up, it was about the heart and emotion he put into his play. He WAS the emotional leader of the Championship teams in the 90s.
