Your writing is getting worse. I didn't think that was possible, as it was already wallowing around in the sewage.
Do you know anything about golf? OK...that it is played over 18 holes doesn't count.
What you saw Sunday, and all week, was one of the best swings in the game come into his own at a major. Of course, since you haven't heard of him, you go for the easy play by writing about Tiger--again. What a waste. Immelman hit some spectacular shots, canned some huge pressure putts, and walked off champion. He shook off bad breaks and responded with excellence. If you weren't in the snack tent horsing down pimento cheese sandwiches and writing your column off TV coverage, you would have seen it.
I know. That's asking too much. Go back to writing about Barry Bonds. Leave the golf to someone who understands the game, it's players, and it's pressures. We don't need tubby dudes who can't walk 18 holes in the heat pontificating about something that never happened.
Yes, he had a good day, but nobody cares about Immelman, because he's just another average (at best) PGA golfer. You have to remember that Tiger is the face of golf and the only reason the majority of the golf audience tune in at all.
Writers are given jobs based on their ability to get people to read their articles, so you can't blame the guy for targeting the audience of millions as opposed to the audience of thousands. People, myself included, really don't want to read about the guy who failed to make the cut in half the tournaments he's entered this year when they can read about the guy who tries to make a habit of never missing the cut. Further, people really don't care about a guy who just scored the 2nd victory of his career, regardless of where it happened, when they can hear about the guy who is the favorite to win any tournament he enters.
Immelman will go back to missing cuts, Tiger will go back to winning tournaments, and writers will continue to target their audiences...that's just the way it goes.
You know, your post would be a little more credible, if you actually knew what you were talking about....saying, nobody cares about Immelman, because he is an average golfer at best? Dude, the week before the Master's started, Immelman, was ranked the 29th best player in world! The week before that he was ranked the 27th best player in the world. THAT IS THE WORLD, the world golf rankings...not the 27th best player at your local municipal golf course...
Nick Faldo who won a few majors himself, and could be considered, a highly regarded opinion on the game, is under the opinion that Tiger Woods and Trevor Immelman have the two most solid swings in the game.
And just of note: Trevor Immelman is now the 15th ranked player in the WORLD rankings! But you are right, that is average...for the top 30 players in the world.
Got get your facts straight before you spout off...especially if your sporting Hunter in your icon. Hunter was no hack.
For pete's sake, maliks3, you're hammering Ratto for something you apparently agree with. All he basically said was the game of golf is better off if Tiger Woods earns his titles. In my book, I believe that means Ratto was glad Immelman won.
Looks like I found one of those few thousand fans I referred to in my original post...
Well, EG, you aparently use different criteria to define average, because average in my book encompasses about 99% of the players on tour. Your use of the World Golf Ranking as your defense is laughable. It is nothing more than a broken tool which gives too much weight to wins and not enough penalty for bad play. Think of it as an even more flawed version of the BCS and RPI. It's not even close to a perfect judge of talent. Really, look at some of the names in the top 50...Martin Kaymer, Richard Sterne, Toru Taniguchi, Robert Karlsson...you've got to be kidding me.
Consider this... If John Daley, who currently resides in 587th place were to have magically received an exemption and won the Masters, he would have jumped 538 places to 49th in the rankings. Not a bad deal considering he has 0 wins and only 2 top 5s in the past 2 years including the 3rd he snatched at the prestigious Livermore Valley Wine Country Championship last week. Those two top 5s go nicely with the 19 missed cuts he has in some of the most ridiculous no-name tournaments you could possibly imagine, but, again, if he'd been in the field and had a career week he'd suddenly be 49th. It really speaks volumes about exactly how average the rest of the tour really is outside top few.
If you can explain to me how Immelman is one of the elite golfers in the world when he manages to turn his 9th ranking in total driving into the 40th ranking in GIR% and a 198th ranking in putting average, I'm all ears. It would appear, however, that he's the type of player who can only claim a better than average driver as an asset. That means, at worst, he's the type of player who will turn his short game and putting into an avenue for missed cut after missed cut as has been the case in the very recent past. The flat stick wins tournaments, not the driver, so he can have the best looking swing in the history of the world and that's going to get him exactly nowhere when his short game and putter let him down nearly every week.
Now, since your tone was so friendly in your response to my original post, allow me to return the favor... If you would like to spout something other than World Golf Rankings which serve to do nothing but prove my point that Immelman is truly just a part of the herd, then I would be glad to hear it. However, if all you've got to back you up is a huge hard-on for Immelman and a rankings system that has been flawed since its inception, then I'd suggest you stick to starting more threads that nobody cares to read or comment on.
Perfect...now there's the Hunter we all know and love..All I'm saying is that I don't think Immelmans win was a fluke...he has a very good record at the Masters...
and which Thread of mine were you refering too? I believe the thread I posted on this article did quite fine...
but then again...I try to post threads and not just merely reply....but go ahead and keep playing it safe...
