This article or the fact that this needs to be done bothers me. It seems as if people in baseball are shocked that there are less African Americans in baseball. Demographically baseball is not a popular sport among African Americans for many different reasons. Baseball is not played as often in cities and more populated areas because of the need for space. It also is viewed as one of the least initially profitable sports, if a high school student has to choose between baseball and basketball and football he isn't going to choose baseball because he could be up to a decade away from making it big, this creates a large amount of financial risk.
Now for the grading prospects. Well first it is sad that it has come to where company's get graded on the diversity of their hirings. I don't believe it is possible to do this because it is not as if the one who is observing sits in on every interview and critiques the applicants. If there are no qualified applicants of a minority then, the company should not be judged on this, and if there is qualified candidates but there are stronger candidates who are male or white then they should still get the job because they are stronger candidates. Plus I would think having over 40% of the positions being filled by women should be great. It is highly likely that women do not strive and push for jobs in baseball so for them to be that close in percentage of staff should be extraordinary. I am almost certain that MLB does not have a50/50 applicant pool to draw from. It should be taken into account the amount of each races, genders, and ethnicities amount and percentage of applicants well before the final numbers are tallied. However in the long run, I think it is sad that in the year 2008 we are by passing actual equality for numerical and statistical equality which does not place everyone on a playing field but takes them off of it.

What is the percentage in the NBA?
The article isn't clear on how much is deemed enough? What percentage is going to make everyone happy?
Should we make the minority the majority - will that satisfy?
Not to worry, Obama will take care of the MLB "problem" when he is elected...

This article is pathetic, where is the percentages for basketball? How come there is no out cry b/c of the lack of white athletes in the sport.
This is 2008 this should not be an issue anymore, the best qualified person gets the job. period.

It is baseball! You pick the best players to play! I have never read an article about the NBA, and the NBA's percentages of whites in the league compared to blacks. It is just something these people get paid for. All they are doing is creating a false sense of there being something wrong.

Does it matter? No it doesnt this article is flippin dumb and the people that do this research are even dumber. I dont care if the numbers stated that blacks are 100% of baseball or 1%, sam with any other race. Best person should get the job, I dont care if there purple. I can not stand stuff like this.

Who cares about the percentage of blacks in baseball. I don't care about the percentage of blacks in hockey, football or basketball. Just like I don't care about the percentage of whites in any of those spots. The only people who care and make an issue seem to be blacks (not all the time).
Anybody who plays sports are going to play what they like, what they have access to and what they are good at and in the case of elite athletes what sport they think they can have a future in.

While it is good to see an increase in African American and female individuals in higher positions, this article mentions nothing about success, which is what is ultimately measured in the world of sports that we live in. It is easy for a professor to hand out grades by calculating percentages, however the difficult part comes in measuring success with regards to tenure and other factors.

If the percentage of black athletes are down than what is the solution? Should franchises be mandated to draft a percentage of blacks like they do in the real work force? I believe the numbers are a result of the law of averages. More blacks live in larger cities where basketball is more prominant than baseball. Therefore, more high profile black basketball players come out of these communities. The result is more younger black children looking up to these athletes and wanting to be like them. If it is the black community that is upset about the numbers, than it should be up to the black baseball players and leaders to promote baseball to their respective communities.

Is it just me, or are a lot of you reading this almost as an affirmative action story? Nowhere in this story did I read anybody pushing to get more blacks playing (in the front office positions is a different story) but it's just accentuating a trend over recent years. There is a great history of blacks in baseball and many have noticed the sharp decline in black players, it has become an issue for people that want to see more blacks play the game, like C.C. Sabathia.
It isn't saying that teams are discriminating, it's simply to point out that an entire demographic is drifting away from baseball more and more.
I think a lot are trying to put a judgemental spin on this story while I see it as simply stating, the number of black players continues to dwindle.
