Kansas is hardly a program Self "built". Roy Williams is the Daddy of this program and he always will be. Billy Donovan "built" Florida. When we recognize a guy who built a program, he is the one who took them from insignificant to big time. (See Howard Schellenberger, not Jimmy Johnson or Butch Davis). Its no slap in Self's face, he has worked his tail off and deserves a heap of credit for the accomplishments of the program, but he didnt build it, he kept it going.

I'll grant you that Self didn't build it, but neither did Roy, he inherited a national championship caliber team, see 1988 national championship, and continued it as a quality program, Self just took it back to it's heights.

True Justin but Roy had to deal with certain NCAA restrictions that existed as a result of that National team. Also Roy did a little more than run it as a quality program. Self is a great recruiter and a very good coach. Roy's winning percentage (Best among active coaches if I am not mistaken) speaks of how good a coach he is. Self inherited a program in better shape from Roy than Roy did from Larry Brown. Everybody talks about Self as this righteous guy? Why hes did what anybody else would do , used his National Championship as leverage to get better pay. Also let's not kid ourselves. Roy going from Kansas to UNC is nothing worse than a push in terms of program strength and in some eyes it was a slight upgrade for Roy. Self going from Kansas to OK State would have been like leaving the Lakers to coach the Clippers, not even close outside of the money the boosters could pay.

Roy Williams built KU? Did you fall off your rocker and hit your head. There are a lot of coaches in sports I'd give that credit towards. A guy like Bobby Bowden, could rightly get that claim.

If you think Roy Williams did anything but maintain the KU program, you need not discuss the subject any longer. Run, don't walk, to your history book and educate yourself. Such a statement is entirely ignorant of not only Kansas basketball, but many of the other major programs in the sport, many of which had their key members associated with the University.

You go back and look at what a guy by the name of James Naismith does in inventing the game, Phog Allen's tremendous accomplishments (maybe more so than any other one individual in the sport, when you consider his offshoots). Heck, Wilt Chamberlain is alone responsible for so many of the vital rule changes in the sport since his time.

All of these are from the University of Kansas, and all of them before anyone, anywhere, knew who Roy Williams ever was.

"When we recognize a guy who built a program, he is the one who took them from insignificant to big time."

First off... Roy did a lot of things with the program that we can all be proud of and thank him for, but this quote is ridiculous. Kansas basketball has never been insignificant... EVER... PERIOD! So Roy was just another guy who had upkeep on our fabled program not "it's Daddy." Phog Allen is the one that "built" this program. Oddly enough that's why his name is on the front of the house this team lives in. Dean Smith built Carolina his name is on his arena. Roy was just another passer by in the long history of great coaches we have had. So lets not make Ol' Roy into more than what he was. If he was a "great" coach he would have done what "the Dean" did and turned away his alma mater and created a legacy for himself instead of livin in somebody elses shadow the rest of his career.

Bill Self is and will be a better coach than Roy is and was. It took him 5 years with the status of Kansas to get his recruits and win a championship. How many did Roy get us in 15 years? Bill Self has beat Roy in 2 out of there 3 games they have played in the tourney. And i'm pretty sure one of those was the A** Whoopin the Jayhawks just gave Carolina on our way to the Championship this year.

Do me a favor... If you're not gonna say something that can be backed up... Just don't say anything at all.

Congrats Coach Self on the "Best Season" we have had in 20 years and Congratulations on your first of hopefully many Championships at Kansas.

Rock Chalk Jayhawk... Go KU!

I agree that Roy Williams has a lot to do with the MODERN success of the KU program, but he is by no means the daddy of KU bsaketball.  The tradition runs much deeper than Roy.  The length of KU basketball history is very long and reaches many of the powerhouse programs (See Dean Smith at North Carolina-KU grad and Adolph Rupp and Kentucky-KU grad).

You think Williams is the Daddy of Kansas BB?  I have all the respect in the world for Roy.  He gave us 15 great years at Kansas.  His decision to return to UNC where his family lived was understandable, and most Jayhawkers hold no grudges. But he isn't the Daddy of Kansas BB.  Many others built the legacy...Dr. Naismith, Phog Allen...even Dean Smith.  Bill Self brought a championship in 5 years...with his own recruits.  The same with Larry Brown.  Roy didn't bring one in the 15 years he was here.   Again, I don't want to knock Roy...he was and always will be a very important part of KU. But he's not the Daddy.  A favorite uncle maybe, but not the Daddy.

Roy Williams STILL has not managed to win a national title with his own players. And I find it funny that Kansas won a title immediately before he got there and they picked up another one now that he's gone and Bill Self has a team full of his own recruits.

The only thing Roy Williams built was a reputation for choking.

Roy Williams is NOT the "Daddy" of the KU program. He did not build it, originate it, or put it on the map. He did enhance it, but in NO way did he build it.

James Naismith (ever heard of him?), Phog Allen, Ted Owens, Larry Brown, Wilt Chamberlain (ever heard of him, too?), Clyde Lovelette, Dean Smith (player), Adolph Rupp (player), JoJo White, Danny Manning are all part of the guys who helped build this program. KU was a cadillac program long before Roy ever showed up.

Roy did not take KU from "insignificant" to the big time. It was big time before he got there.

5 National Titles and let's just get this straight, none of them came from Roy.  Although he did have teams that it seems impossible to not win one with.
