Coach Self would have done fine at OSU, maybe even have turned them into Title contenders after a while. But, truth be told, he would have been nothing more than a snippet of the history and the fraternity of all the GREAT (including in the second degree) coaches that have come through the University of Kansas. Now he's going to be a part of it. This is not to dismiss the history of OSU, they will still find a good coach, they are a Big XII school, they have some history of their own, so, their fans shouldn't worry too much about this. The truth is, Coach loves it here, we fans love him, and he has the opportunity to achieve greatness here, and if he left, his recruiting power would have suffered, if nothing else, due just to the fact that he abandoned the non-senior portion of a National Championship team, and one heck of a recruiting class.

I agree JustinJayhawker.....Coach Self now has the opportunity to leave a great legacy at Kansas. The great thing about Coach Self is that he thought of the future players at Kansas in his negotiations.....He wants better facilities. A practice facility, media room, locker rooms, housing, updating Allen Fieldhouse, extending the Hall of Fame, etc....Now you have a great recruiter armed with a national championship and the promise of new facilities being built.....It will be hard for kids to say 'no' to Bill Self (who is a great recruiter anyway) when he strolls into their homes armed with that. Thank you Lew Perkins for keeping Coach Self at Kansas.

I am not a fan of the Jayhawks but I am a fan of Bill Self now. He could have bolted to his former college, and made more money but he just decided to stay and keep kansas growing.  That is character.

Perfect completion of my sentiments, lost track of my train of thought, thank you.

that was a delayed response to the initial response to the thread, just for clarification.

So I guess if ESPN or someone else comes along and offers GParrish a gig that pays more, he will turn it down.

This is a career move, Self figures to get more from staying than he would have gotten leaving.  He is not a saint, nor would he have been any of the names he may have been called had he left.  He made a calculated decision.

Lets hope it works out for all involved.

Ole Ballpark, your comments are rather cynical, don't you think?  Not that I know Mr. Self, or even know his position, but I bet that Self's position is much different than even Parrish's.  One, for instance, is the pay.  I guarantee, and I'll bet Parrish back me up, that Self earns MANY times more money.  Also, Self gets to be a Div I coach, no matter what the school.  Parrish, on the other hand, get's a salary much less, and he doesn't get to play or coach on any major team (college or NBA).

Self has (had) a decision that ultimately is the same:  A lot of money, or UNTHINKABLE amounts of money.  Two big Midwestern schools.  A good basketball school, or a storied basketball school.  But when it came down to it, he realized that his personal dreams probably included being a National Champion coach, and that he didn't want to jump away from that (quite yet).  I don't consider that a career move, I consider that a personal decision.

Parrish's situation would be different:  ESPN could offer Parrish a much more 'rich' style of living, possibly a job closer to home (I guess...I didn't do any checking of Parrish's life), and perhaps a more prominent position within the Sportswriter Elite (not sure what that would be, but whatever).  In any case, Parrish's decision does not discount the money, because he probably doesn't make more than $100,000 (or even $60,000).  Same for the rest of us...we can decide to make the career move, or we can turn it down for personal reasons.  Self turned it down, and Parrish could too, but their situations would be MUCH different.
