He knows the Pac 10, he's a proven winner, knows the area, recruits great, what more could you ask for if you're Cal?
Great hire, now they have to hope Anderson stays and they'll be in decent shape.

This move made perfect sense for everyone. Its a good fit for both Mike Montgomery and Cal. He belongs back in college coaching and can stay in the Bay Area and do a great job with Cal. He is exactly the kind of coach that Cal would be looking for too and brings instant credibility with him. Good hire, Golden Bears!

This is definitely a step in the right direction. Montgomery knows the Bay Area like the back of his hand, and his hiring will likely re-engage some older donors who remember his Stanford success. I do remain slightly concerned about what Baron Davis said about him during his tenure with the Warriors. Montgomery does live up to that criticism as an autocrat, but it may be precisely that attitude which allows him to get some discipline into Cal basketball.
I'm not stoked, but I'm reserving judgement with lots of hope. Things haven't been the same since Jason Kidd was there those two years.

Well, Monty's Stanford teams were the pioneers of modern pac-10 hoops: Foul hard every time the other team goes into the lane becaus pac-10 officials largely only call fouls on the perimeter. It's ugly an unpleasant, but it's how to win pac-10 games. The fact that Montgomery is 237 years old is a big negative. Even if they do well, he'll retire in 4-5 years when his first recruiting class graduates. Then what? Should have hired a younger guy.

Despite his age, still a very good hire... he'll be there more like 8 years or so and Cal can expect a PAC-10 title or two... and maybe a Final Four trip... he's had what, 4 30+ win seasons at Stanford?... as good a hire as they could make, certainly a safe one

Montgomery is coming into a very different Pac-10 from when he left it. The conference is now very competitive and the pressure has been turned up quite a few notches. Personally, I don't think he will ever reach higher then 4th or 5th in the conference, but I could be wrong.

Perhaps Cal would like to trade Montgomery for Trent Johnson? I doubt it.
Monty, how could you??

I think Cal did a great thing by bringing in Montgomery to coach. As stated, he is a good recruiter, good at the college level Xs and Os and has a proven track record. For a program as down as Cal is to bring in a coach of his caliber is a huge step in the right direction.
As a Stanford fan, I am conflicted over how to feel. Montgomery was good to us and I always felt there was a chance he would return after next season, when, hopefully, Trent is sent packing.
It will take him at least 2-3 seasons to bring the program at Cal back to the top half of the Pac 10 standings especially if Anderson decides to go.

This was a great hire by Cal. Mike has great knowledge of the Pac-10 plus he knew how to win during his time at Stanford. If he can get Anderson to stay they could be a tournament team next season but if not we are going to have to give him a couple of years to recruit and get his players in there.

I hate to break it to you, jmred, but Johnson coaches Stanford exactly the way Monty used to: by having his guys play like thugs. Monty originated the modern Pac-10 style, which is to foul and foul hard every time the other team goes into the lane. Why do this? Because Pac-10 officials don't call fouls in the lane. UCLA was extremely successful with this strategy this year. It's why Al Aboya looks like a good player. It's why Madsen was a star.
So, it's not Johnson's coaching that kept this (quite successful) Stanford team from being more successful. The real problem was that Stanford probably had the second worst back court in the Pac-10. Brook Lopez can only carry you so far.
