I'm not sure I agree here. If you foul, the clock stops. Suppose Kansas hits two, then Memphis has the ball back with a one point lead. They inbound and are fouled immediately. Given how many free throws Memphis missed in the clutch yesterday (and how many they missed all season), there's plenty of reason to believe they'd have missed those, too. That might give Kansas the ball and, although they'd only have had a second or two left, they'd have had a second or two to hit a basket for the WIN, not the tie. By not fouling, Memphis ensures that they do not lose in regulation.
That said, I agree with you that the right coaching move is to foul in that situation. I just don't think it's as clear cut as you say it is.
