As I've posted in prior posts, Bobby Lutz is a likable guy who seems to run a clean program. Maybe it's Charlotte playing in the A10 where they have no natural rivalries and a return to Conference USA in the coming years with the emergence of a football program will help, but I honestly think Charlotte has just stamped itself with 5 more years of mediocrity. The 49er nation seems to accept its place as not being an elite program. Things could be worse. I went to school at Charlotte during the Wisel-Ball era. Jeff Mullins came in and returned respectability but seemed to stagnate in ever taking the program forward to another level. Melvin Watkins appeared to be on the virge of big things before his departure for Texas A & M as evidenced by Charlotte winning several Conference USA Tournaments and/or regular season titles when the league was still loaded with the Big East departures of Louisville, Marquette and Cincy. Niners came within a hair of knocking off a very loaded UNC team in the 98 NCAA Tournament (Vince Carter and Antawan Jamison). Watkins was the overseer of what was the greatest Charlotte recruiting class ever that included the tragic situation of Charles Hayward. At first I thought Lutz was going to continue Watkins' successes, but as Melvin's footprint faded, to me Lutz has regressed the program back to the Mullins days. I know its tough playing in the shadow of the ACC, but if a school like Butler can excel, why can't Charlotte? Excellent school with great facilities now recognized as its own entity "Charlotte" instead of "UNCC." I have to believe a lot of the "problems" rest with a coach a little older who is satisfied with status quo. Not a losing school; but not one that's hungry to try and move to another level.

I can't help but agree with you, when I see teams like VCU upset Duke last year, and San Diego upset UCONN this year, I can't help but wonder why Charlotte can not seem to move forward. I like Bobby Lutz but he can't seem to get over the hump in the Post-season, it's time for the school to move forward.
That being said, I also blame the UNCC for not moving forward more quickly to get a football program started, because who knows how many recruits have bypassed us simply because we dont have one and football is a big part of the "college" experience for the most well known schools, even if the football team isn't great, hello UNC?
Let's face it, if we had started football in the 90s like UCONN, we could be in the Big East right now, or we could have stayed in CUSA. Come on CHarlotte, time for football!

To suggest that guys go to play basketball at UNC because they have a football team is a bit of a reach. Yeah, it defenintly wouldn't hurt to have one, but that's not Lutz's fault. Could our program be better? Absolutely, but I think we've missed out on some good recruits. Remember that Beasley initially committed to Charlotte, we have Dalonte Hill to thank, for him going to Kansas St. My question for you guys is who would you rather have than Lutz? I don't think Charlotte could get a better coach than him and then the program would really take a step back.

I like Bobby Lutz. I think it is important that the kids go to class and he runs a clean program. However his coaching style, with its absolute reliance on the three point shot, does frustrate me. I'd love to see Charlotte develop an inside game.
In terms of conference affiliation, the A-10 has some "names," but Charlotte would be better off in the CAA. The long term hope is that the Big East and A-10 will combine into a 12 team football conference (say UMass, Temple, and whoever moving up to 1-A) and that Charlotte can hook up with the other basketball only schools (GWU, Georgetown, etc.). Even if Charlotte gets football it will be years before it gets to the 1-A level; so that won't be helpful anytime soon.
Three cheers for Cavidson, and good luck to Bobby Lutz.

To those of you who believe he is mediocre let's take a math lesson: 10 years, 188 wins, 5 NCAA Tourneys, 3 NCAA Tourney wins, 3 NITs, 2 league tourney championships and damn good graduation rate. That's 80% postsesaon success and 50% NCAA rewards.
The seeding in the NCAA Tourney is a crap-shoot. The year we were a 5 seed our only big man, Kelvin Price, had food poisoning and Oklahoma upset us. We are the 8-9 game most of the time we were in we were a 7 and NC State got us good. We haven't been the same since. But, we won 19 games and 20 in 2 of the last 3 years and that isn't mediocre.
How many ACC schools besides Duke and North Carolina can say they played in 5 of 10 NCAA Tourneys? Oh yes, NC State did and they let Herb get away. Now, that was a great decision. Clemson just made it back for the first time in Decade. I ask becasue that's who he is measured against. Don't even bring Davidson into the equation. One-hit wonder. Fun team, though.
If Lutz is mediocre, I'll take him anytime.

I'd investigate that math just a hair and see what's behind the #s. After Melvin Watkins left abruptly, how many of Charlotte's successes came with Watkins' players? The one team you refer to with Kelvin Price that lost to Oklahoma with Navara (sp?) had players that were recruited under Melvin. The team that got crushed by Notre Dame with Jobey Thomas was probably the first group that was virtually all Lutz's guys. Like I said in my first post, Bobby is okay. I honestly don't know what an alternative would be. Probably a young guy who isn't as well know. Maybe even somebody from the Charlotte tree like Benny Moss. But I'm just really concerned that Charlotte has regressed to where it was in the early 90s under Jeff Mullins. Decent program that occasionally captures some attention by having some decent runs. But more than not, it's a program that doesn't receive much respect and just cannot seem to take things to another level. I personally believe the whole mindset of the alumni and athletic department under Judy Rose is satisfied with status quo. Know your place and realize that you have a good program but you just have to realize the limitations given playing in the same geographic region as the ACC. I'm an alumnus so maybe I'm guilty. But like Coach Watkins said after the Niners fell to North Carolina in OT in the round of 32 in the 98 Tournament, "if his guys were satisfied with being close, they didn't belong on his team." I'm afraid Bobby is satisfied with being close.

If any of you think that Bobby Lutz is satisfied with being close, I don't think you have followed the program closely or know who your coach is. Have we considered that the reason Melvin was able to win in the brief 2 years he was head coach was that Lutz was doing the coaching? How did Melvin do after he took the $ and ran? He was fired after 5 years of sucking. His replacement won immediately with Melvins players. As for the 3-ball, we averaged 1 more 3 per game than our opponents. You have to make shots, no matter where you are standing, and when we hit them, we can beat anybody. Just ask Clemson, Davidson, Umass, St Joe's etc.
The numbers the other response referred to are accurate, and they are impressive. Look at where Charl came from. Changing conf affiliation may have made recruiting a little more difficult, but with the freshman class we just had, and losing 1 starter, the Niners are headed in the right direction and back to the NCAA's! Guys, Lutz is a competitor and a winner, as his record shows. We're lucky to have him. GO NINERS!!

I hope you're right. I hate living in the shadow of UNC/Dook/Etc. I give Davidson huge kudos for their run, but I wish it was us. At least we beat them. As you say, GO NINERS!
