I started this poll because todays game vs St Louis Cardinals might provide a true answer to the Mets 5th starter question. I really have no idea who it may be, so I just picked Heilman for the heck of it since I dont think El Duque can make the switch to a totally different delivery and Mike Pelfrey just hasnt shown he belongs in the starting rotation. I dont know if there are any trades the Mets could make or who might be available as a #5 starter, so if anyone knows that info please share it and maybe that could be a way to go to get a #5 starter in the Mets rotation.

I feel that it will be Pelfrey for the time being, until El Duque can regain his dominance.  Ultimately though I feel that El Duque will be the biggest benefit to the bullpen as a long reliever for the days that Ollie can't make it far into the game.  But like I stated earlier it will be Pelfrey if for the only reason that El Duque hasn't had enough time to loosen up his arm this spring and will need a couple of weeks of work to get used to the new delivery.

I can't say who it will be, but I can say who I think it SHOULD be.  Mike Pelfrey should win the #5 spot. He's young and has a lot to prove. He's our #1 pitching prospect and deserves a chance to show what he can do. We probably won't need him until mid-late April, but Hernandez is the most unreliable pitcher in MLB. If the wind blows, he gets hurt.

I think Hernandez will get an extended stay in spring training. Pelfrey will be sent to New Orleans and the Mets will use Pelfrey and Hernandez's spot to keep Register so he won't be offered back. Then one will be recalled and one reliever will be released or sent down.

As far as I'm concerned if Hernandez never pitches another inning for the Mets, I'll be happy. The Mets should have never brought him back last year and giving him the second year was pure insanity. I say give Pelfrey a shot for 2008. If he flops, you can go to Armas or sign Lohse or even make a deal for a back-of-the-rotation guy. I don't think any of those scenarios will be needed. i think Mike will be fine.

The only question is does Willie give a young player a chance or does he stick with  the guy close to his age once again? I have no faith in his ability to make decisions. The fact he's still here is mind numbing.

The only problem with Pelfrey in the #5 spot is that if someone gets hurt and El Duque isn't available, there is no one behind Pelfrey.  (Jason Vargas?  Jose Lima??  Brian Lawrence???)

Wow. After todays performance by Pelfrey and El Duque, I'm sticking with Aaron Heilman as my pick for 5 starter.

Willie sticks to his guns with El Duque. He is throwing BP out there and I think Pelfrey needs more AAA work. The only positive we can say is that were talking about the weakness of a 5 instead of a 3.

Go Mets

I was also very curious as to why the Mets didn't sign Lohse for 5 mil.

Let Hernandez and Sanchez have extended spring trainings to work on their stuff. The Mets need them in September not in April. We are talking about the 5th spot in the rotation let Pelfrey have it and work with Peterson and Schneider. They may help him straighten out his head. Good article on MLB.COM how Pelfrey has been tipping his pitches. If he works on that and gets a mean streak he will be fine.

Good article on MLB.COM how Pelfrey has been tipping his pitches. If he works on that and gets a mean streak he will be fine. I also heard he was tipping his pitches, probably from that article. I also know Pelfrey does have a potentially good to very good upside. If he does come around and solidifies the 5th starting role, he could win 10 games or more depending on his playing time. Its a long shot, but crazier things have happened.

Aaron Heilman is not an option, Sanchez is not 100% and Heilman's arm is not ready to start.

I only figured Aaron Heilman as a possibility because if El Duque goes to the pen and Pelfrey goes to AAA, then Heilman may have an opportunity to get the 5 spot as El Duque would replace him in relief. I think maybe that could work, in letting El Duque return to his high kick delivery since it would only be an inning or 2 and he could be effective. I dont think its a secret either that Aaron Heilman has stated he would like to be a starter. We'll just see what happens I guess....

I definately can''t see the Mets trying Heilman at this point in his career. Knowing Randolph I think he'll start with El Duque. However, I too see El Duque falling apart and Willie having to look somewhere else. I think Pelfrey would be the most obvious candidate, but keep in mind the Mets signed Tony Armas in the offseason... and it may come down to who pitches better in AAA Armas or Prlfrey.

Watching him throw today was painful!!!  very painful!  What is it that he does not understand?  Throw off the corners and low.  NOT over the middle of the plate at belt high.  He made the St. Louis Cardinals look like the '27 Yankees.  Are you kidding me...Is this our 5th starter?

Omar Minaya apparently hinted yesterday that Nelson Figueroa had the inside track to be the fith starter to open the season... what a mess this is!

The Mets talked about slotting Jorge Sosa back into the rotation to start the year in hopes of regaining some of the spark he had last year, but then they remembered that he's Jorge Sosa...

El Duque is done. Done, Done, Done... It's a shame, because he still has some life left in his arm, but without a solid delivery, he throws meatballs.  He can't even throw it as hard as Jaime Moyer at this point... Time to hang 'em up Duque!

Pelfrey has been given ample opportunity to win the job this spring.  He's been brilliant in flashes, and then he just implodes... he loses his fire, and sense of urgency... he simply goes out there and throws BP when he's off.  His confidence is so shaken that one scout said that Pelfrey was better when he first came up two years ago than he is now... Looks like the bullpen is in his future.  That way if he doesn't have it he can be replaced, but when he does have it he'll mow guys down.

That leaves the Mets looking at:

  1. Tony Armas Jr. who's just beginning his spring training and reeks a Jose Lima type stay with the Mets
  2. Figueroa who has actually been reliable this spring, but there is no way I want to rely on him longer than a month or so
  3. Jon Niese... Omar said that he'd have no problem promoting this kid this year if the Mets rotation falls victim to injuries.  While I think he has a good future as a middle of the rotation starter, he's never pitched above A ball...  He looked good in his spring starts, but is very young and inexperienced...

Kind of makes you wonder what Jeff Weaver is up to!
