Last year, the Cougs got knocked out early.  But it was their first taste of the NCAA Tourney and I think that plays a big role in March.  This year, they are playing like the senior-laden team that they are.  They are a year older and a year wiser.  They have tourney experience and it's shining through so far this year.  Oh, and their coach isn't too bad, either.  The Bennett system is proven yet again.

Here's to hoping they can keep it going next weekend.

Congrats Cougars!

To play good in the regular season is nice.....but right now they're playing the best basketball they've played all season.  What perfect timing.

Go COUGS!

The last time Washington State won two tourney games, they eventually lost in the title game to Wisconsin.  Coincidence?  I think not.

Go Cougs and Badgers!  PLEASE give me my dream matchup in the Final Four!  Of course, then I'd have to root against the Cougs for the first time since the Bennetts took over the program.  But that'd be o.k., methinks.

By the way.  Washington State has a pretty good defense.  I think if these teams met in the Final Four it would cause analysts from around the nation to pitch fits because they would absolutely HATE to have to cover a game of fundamental basketball.  Who would they pick?  They'd probably find a way to predict both teams losing.

I'm not looking ahead as both teams have a tough weekend ahead.  I'm just saying right now that if these two teams met, it'd be my basketball dream come true.

Boy, talk about a clash of styles.  A team scoring over 100/game against a team allowing less than 50.

I sure hope Wash St can find a way to stop NC.

Good luck Cougs!

I have been pulling for the Badgers all year, misfit basketball loves company. Just keep your mittens off our coach. I know what you guys are thinking; Bo Ryan can't coach forever.

Go Cougs!

Oh yeah.  I hope he doesn't get hired at Indiana.  It might be tougher to pull him away from there.

Actually, by the time Bo retires, Tony may be established enough and have built a winning tradition that he doesn't want to leave.  I think he really could end up that good and established.

But, I have definitely thought about him being the next coach.  Don't know if it's even possible, but I have the most possible respect for him as a person and as a coach.  You guys got a quality dude there.

Me too, it would be a disaster if Tony went to Indiana. We love that guy; were terrified someone is going to steal him.

I actually attended UWGB while he was the star player and his dad was coach.  I think he still holds the record for 3 point percentage.  Averaged like 25 a game.  When they beat the Jason Kidd led Cal team it was the first great moment in my college basketball fandom life.  Been a fan of the Bennetts ever since.

I remember having class with him.  Biology or some other huge class.  He would sit with his girlfriend who I think is now his wife.  She was a cheerleader, LOL!  Bastage!  Star athlete, gets the hot cheerleader...and now the best young coach in college bball.  Thing is, he's a good dude, too, so I love the fact that he's doing so well.  He's an easy guy to root for.

When his dad became coach, he said something to the effect of "people in Wisconsin probably don't even remember me any more".  I sent him an email that said something to the effect of "How could we ever forget you..."  He actually replied to it, LOL!  Said "Thanks...that's very kind...God bless you."

I was in grad school at Wisconsin when he brought the Badgers to the Final Four.  That was simply the greatest moment in my college basketball lovin' life.  And as long as Tony stays with you guys you'll taste the Final Four at some point (maybe even this year).  I guarantee it.

Yup...I've been a huge WSU fan ever since he was hired.  And I really think they have a shot against NC this weekend.  It'll take a great game but I think they have it in them.

Experience absolutely matters!!  The thing is that Low and Weaver have been playing each oher for 4 years!!!  Thier chemistry is almost perfect not like other young teams.  In addtion, other players had been tourney last year so they are so much ready for beating UNC on Thursday.

My prediction:

WSU 78: UNC 76 (OT)

WE BELIEVE!! Do not be afraid of UNC jerseys!!!!

Go Cougs~~~~~~~~~~

Badger_Colorado,

I haven't followed Wisconsin a great deal this year, but what are they going to do to at least somewhat contain Curry?  He's scored in the double digits in every game he's played this year, so you know that he's going to continue firing the ball up.

They'll start by putting Michael Flowers on him.  Flowers is one of the best defenders in the country.  The Badgers play strictly man to man and Flowers will be on Curry like glue.  They'll also probably run him around and make him play defense, fight through picks, etc.  That hurt Beasley against KState.  He had a big first half and a quiet second half.  I'm sure Bo Ryan has other things planned as well.

However, the nice thing about this Badgers team is that single or double option teams simply don't beat them.  Cal State Fullerton had a guy who scored 30 because he was on fire against them, draining crazy 3s and generally hitting contested shots, but the Badgers won by 15 and they were pulling away in the second half.

So, Curry alone will not make the difference.  They HAVE to have other guys step up or they can't win.  I'm a little nervous about the game because Davidson is easily the best team Wisconsin has faced thus far, but if they play their game they'll win handily.

And I'm believin' in the Cougs, too, GoCoug!  I think they may have a better D than Wisconsin.  And it's more than just Lowe and Weaver, isn't it?  Cowgill is a part of that bunch the whole time, too.  Not to mention their crop of Juniors have been getting lots of minutes for the past 3 years.  They are going to give NC all they can handle.

Flowers is definitely athletic enough.  Good luck.  It should me the matchup to watch.

That's a really good point.  The kid you're speaking of is Josh Akognan.  He was in the same recruiting class with all of WSU's current seniors and played for WSU for two years as a 6th man and part time starter, but I don't think he liked playing defense, so he transferred to CS Fullerton.  I'm not surprised that he's putting up 20 pts a game by now though for a mid major.  He could flat out shoot.

That's nice of you to say, but I think matchups will affect which team has the better D on any given night with those two teams.  Wisconsin has done a hell of a job on the defensive end this year too.  For them to be 16-2 in any major conference with a less than dominant offense is a testament to that.  But to answer your question, it is far more than just Low and Weaver.  On any given night, you'll see any one of 5-6 different players leading them in scoring and/or taking the big shots, and they're all comfortable being in that position.  Hopefully they can knock off at least one of the #1 seeds in this year's tourney.

Yeah...I really think these two teams are mirror images of each other in many ways.  Wisconsin is a little bit bigger, but both teams play stifling defense and patient offense.  Teams hate to play them because they are just not used to that kind of game and it's very hard to dictate tempo against either team.   Man, I sure hope they can both find a way to get to the Final Four.  The rest of the country would hate the matchup, but to me it would be the prettiest basketball game ever played.

I really like Harmeling and Baynes from what I've seen and it seems like Rochestie has done well, too.  It seems those guys will be the foundation next year.  Do you think they have underclassmen who can step up next year after the seniors are gone (I know...too early to worry about that, but I'm curious)?  I haven't been able to watch many games this year because for some reason very few have been covered in Colorado (unlike last year).

I feel like Wash St will compete year in and year out now that they have an established system and I also think they will be in a much better position for recruiting in the years to come.  I'm wondering just how they are going to replace the face of the new Cougar revolution (the super seniors) next year, though.

That has been the topic of a seemingly endless debate on scout.com. Clearly, Rochestie (PG; perhaps moved to SG?), Harmeling (F)  and Baynes (C) will be starters. Forrest, if not a starter, will be seeing a lot of minutes. Outside of that, it seems to be pretty wide open, we have some good guys coming up including some incoming freshmen who could jump right in as well.
