Yeah the officiating has been awful in the tournament and the calls were bad both ways in the UCLA/Texas A&M game but the point is that for some reason officials REFUSE to make a call with time running down in a game. It happens in the NBA, NCAA and even most high school games. For some reason they don't think the game should be determined at the line. It's a joke. A foul is a foul no matter at what time it occurs in a game. That guy from A&M got totally raped on his way to the hoop last night. No ball at all, it was all arm. Watch the replay. I'm no fan of either team but when it comes to that, the officials need to quit swallowing their whistles.

If the bad calls were limited to this game, I would have no problem.  But this is now 3 times that UCLA has ESCAPED with a win, thanks to the refs.  I understand the tradition and all, but that shouldn't guarantee wins.  And I have seen more doubtful fouls called in games this year at the end, most recently Cal vs New Mexico.  That should have been called.  Maybe he misses a free throw anyway, but it has to be called.  Don't even say anything about bad calls earlier in the game, since it seems they went both ways, but that last one should be called.

Cactuskev

"A foul is a foul no matter at what time it occurs in a game"  I heard such commentators such as Bob Knight and others say this as well about various games.

I couldn't agree more. I too have no stake in this game as I am a not a fan of either team but the refs should try to make an effort to be consistent and as you said not swallow there whistles based on the amount of time on the clock. I have seen too much of this through conference tournaments and in this tournament. Others can say that officiating is difficult and I can understand that to a point, but when it is clearly in your face you have to make the call. I have seen UCLA be on the good side of these calls/no calls to much towards the end of this season.

Does anyone really think the NCAA is going to let Duke AND UCLA go out on the same day?

Compare the two "fouls" and see which one is worse.  Cal got the call, A&M didn't.  Granted, that picture is after the block, but there is no picture at the time of the block(I don't know why).  But the block was all ball.  Watch this video if you want,

At 1:58, there's a better picture of the block happening.

That is all.

1. A&M fans on this forum...and others like it...have sullied a great performance by their team by whining about the officiating. The coach and the A&M players understand that officials DON'T WIN OR LOSE GAMES. They aren't crying about the call. They had a chance to win, and didn't seal the deal.

2. Bad calls are made both ways. At any time in the game, a bad call affects whether or not points are scored. The ones at the end of the game just get more press, but I've been watching sports for 35 years and have seen that 99.9% of the time, it all evens out. Again, officials don't win or lose games.

3. Most of the time fans don't really know what they want anyway. Or they want what will benefit their team. Do we want tight officiating, where every infraction of the rules is called? Do we want the refs to let the players play and decide the game on the court? At the end of the game do we want the game decided at the stripe, or on the floor...? Come on, I mean really. Most of you whining about that call would have had a coronary if the situation was reversed and Collison was taking the shot and a foul was called on Sloan. You would be saying, "Let the players decide the game, not the officials." or "The wrist is a part of the ball!" Geesh!

4. Refs are people and make mistakes...and don't have the benefit of instant replay or still pictures to assist in making calls. If you've ever actually played basketball, or been anywhere near the floor during a game, you would realize that the game moves fast...really fast...and it is impossible to see everything exactly the way it happens. I've played in pickup games where people argue for 5 minutes over fouls, and we call our own fouls. The person allegedly fouling and the person being fouled can't even agree on the accuracy of the call. Cut the refs some slack.

5. And it's stupid to think the NCAA is telling the refs to change the outcome of games. Won't even discuss it. It sounds like "WAAAAAHHH!" when you suggest that. Be reasonable.

"The better team today lost."

If they were the better team they would not have lost. At least in this universe. In an alternate universe, maybe the better team does lose.

I am a UNC fan, so I wouldn't mind seeing UCLA lose early.  That doesn't mean I can't see homer officiating when it's right there on the tube.  If the officiating in the UCLA/Texas A & M game hadn't been so lopsided in UCLA's favor, Texas A & M wins that game.  There were at least four or five times when the Aggies were right at the rim and UCLA got away with "blocks" that were clearly fouls on most any other court.

It's bad enough that UCLA got a #1 seed based on a record that should have included two more losses.  Stanford lost at Pauley on a REAL blocked shot that cost them the victory, and Cal lost because the officials can't be bothered to call UCLA for a foul they clearly wanted to be called (and an out-of-bounds on UCLA that somehow gave them the ball back for an illegal shot that the ref also can't be bothered to call).

They're already very good, they got to stay home for the early games, they got the easiest region, and the refs STILL have to help them?  CBS must be damn worried about losing the West coast viewers!
