I agree that the coaches should get payed exactly the same (if not more) than the players for this type of trip.  But my freak'n gosh!!!!  $40,000 for a 4 day trip to Japan?  There are families in this country that won't earn $40,000 this year and are trying to pay for a house, food, gas, health care, clothes, and the list goes on.

I love sports, and I love baseball (hate the bo sox), but how twisted is our society when people that make millions to play a game cry over $40,000?  If the coaches mean so much to you, share your own stick'n bonus for playing in Japan.  I guess that the athletes want to insure that we never go back to the days when pro-athletes had to work a second job to support their families.

bisonboy,

It ain't about the $$$ A deal is a deal. If it was free sushi or 40K the deal has been in place since the games were announced. Shame on MLB for backing out on a deal.

Hey, this is a job; for sure, one we would love to have.  The market pays what it will bear and I don't blame anyone for negotiating the salary they get.  I don't know of any people willing to travel for 4 days and have it all come out of their pocket.  In the scheme of things, for baseball, $40K is chump-change but it takes some real small-minded executive to make this kind of decision.  What a real dumb-ass move to create this kind of revolt.

Pay everyone.

Patsnut,

You're right.  A deal is a deal.  MLB is in the wrong here.

I just think that these deals need to start making more sense so that MLB doesn't back out of them.  Why should they even be offering $40,000 to start with for this trip.  How many other businesses in the world would offer such a huge bonus to begin with?

I've seen too many poor people (in the US, Africa, and Mexico) to think that the original deal makes sense.  But then again, the contracts that star players have also don't make sense.

Arguments centered around "A deal is a deal" is different from those centered around "Bo Sox players are heros."
