Was this the same crew that called 5 fouls on the Buckeyes in 42 seconds yesterday? The officiating as a whole in the Big Ten tournament was HORRIBLE. Conference tournament games are very physical, and the refs didn't let the players decide the games . I hope the conference takes a look at this. I mean to take nothing away from Wisconsin, as they are a great team, but 30 fouls with 4 big men fouling out is awful. I guess they thought they had to get MSU back for helping them beat the Buckeyes. Loosen up refs!

i agree buckeye that was a horrible ref'ed game just like the msu osu game.i dont even recall wisconsin making any shots seems like all they did was shoot free throws.was a boring game whistle after whistle.let em play the badgers claim their a tough defensive team, we wanted to show em we are tougher and the refs seemed to call every little foul. seems like every time sparty got up 5-10 points the calls would go against us.if the tourney calls games fair i dont see wisconsin making that big of a run imagine a tennessee or memphis against em.but anyways that game left me with a sour stomach. and i cant believe i agreed about sumthin with a buckeye lol

While I agree there were a few bad calls and very weak fouls called overall it wasn't a poorly officiated game, not compared to some others. The fouls called against OSU yesterday for instance or a couple of the controversial calls for UCLA in the last week of the regular season.
Overall college officiating has been pretty poor this year but this game in particular wasn't too bad. Wisconsin started to pound the ball to try and get back in the game which then led to some fouls being called. If you look over the stats you will see that Wisconsin as a team does cause other teams to foul them so I don't think this was an example of poor officiating as much as it was the style of the game that was played. When you attack the hoop you are going to get fouls.

For the most part, I thought the officiating was fair today. That's not to say it was correct - far from it. They just applied the same standard to both teams. The only two calls I thought were really awful, given the way the rest of the game was officiated, were the call on Allen when he got a clean block from behind and the charge call early on Lucas when the defender undercut him after he was already in the air.
The refs weren't making calls one way that they didn't make the other way - it just so happened that MSU plays a little bit more physical on defense. Not much, but it was apparently the difference to these refs. The referees' style of officiating (which, frankly, was ridiculous - players on both teams were getting called for breathing on the guy with the ball) put MSU at a major disadvantage, but they only favored Wisconsin in that sense - given the standard they set, they called things as close to evenly as can be reasonably expected.

I just think that the officiating during the big 10 tourney in general has been poor, this game was no different. Look at the Minnesota/Indiana game, the last couple seconds Minnesota could have had zero people on the floor and still gotten fouled. That last second rebounding foul? That is a terrible call with just 1 or 2 seconds left.
48 combine fouls is pretty bad though. fouls. At least the refs were consistent; they stuck to their guns and called every miniscule thing that they possibly could, but they did it to both teams.

Watching the game, I commented to my friends that it seemed that MSU's strategy for winning was to force Wisconsin to win from the foul line or to disrupt Wisconsin's offense by fouling. Sparty fouled constantly from the outset of the game. If anything the refs were inconsistent since they called handchecking fouls on both teams at the outset of the game and then as the game progressed the refs swallowed their whistles. The fouls seemed pretty evenly called since it very easily could have gone against Wisconsin....
Wisconsin - Personal fouls
Krabbenhoff (F) - 3
Butch (C)- 3
Landry (C/F)- 3
Flowers (G)- 3
Steimsma (C/F) -3
Hughes (G)- 2
Bohannon (G)- 1
Leuer (F)- 0
Jarmusz (F)- 0
Total of 18 fouls
Michigan State - Personal Fouls
Suton (C) - 5
Naymick (C) -5
Ibok (C) - 5
Morgan (F) - 5
Gray (F) - 3
Nietzel (G) - 2
Lucas (G) - 1
Walton (G) - 1
Allen (G) - 1
Summers (G) -1
Herzog (C) - 1
Total of 30 fouls
As you can see the players who got called most often for both teams were the inside players (compared to the guards)... Wisconsin was pounding the ball inside to take advantage of MSU's weak post play and as a result of poor positioning/defense, lead to the inside MSU guys hacking away instead of establishing position, blocking out for rebounds, and generally challenging Landry, Butch, and Steimsma with stout defense. Bottom line is MSU became sloppy and the game slipped away. You can't blame the refs for this one.

I thought the officials set the tone of the game in the first two minutes. I wasn't impressed with the officiating at all, and they consistently did everything they could to make sure the game never got a "flow". They called a ton of fouls both ways and it didn't feel like a Big 10 game at all. I thought they were consisently overofficiating.
As a Badger fan, I didn't get much enjoyment out of watching 90% of the game what with the Badgers being behind the entire game, all their missed free throws and all that coumpounded by the overzealous officiating...........But all that pales in comparison to having to listen to Billy Packer.....Capital "N", capital "UASEATING!!". How many times did he say "This is just what I was looking for/talking about/expected, etc...right after something occured? I can only imagine what Jim Nance must write about him in his personal journal. He is the primary "blemish" in what is otherwise my most favorite month of the year...every year!!

Great post Pitt. State just basically became lazy on the block for a stretch, where they were allowing Wiscy to get positiion. When that happened, instead of holding their ground and going straight up, they left their feet and swatted at the ball. Why wasn't Wiscy called for as many fouls? Watch what they do when the bigs catch the ball down low. Straight up almost every single time, without leaving their feet.
If anything, I thought State got away with a LOT of moving picks when they were freeing up Neitzel. Not only that, but a lot of the fouls that were called were soooo obvious. Bottom line was Wiscy played a lot more disciplined down low, and they were rewarded.

Message to Ed Hightower:
The games are not about you. How about the next time you make a foul call, you walk over to the scorers' table and make the call. We've all had enough of watching you get in the face of players who you're calling fouls on, and holding your foul pose for 5 seconds.
Go start your own reality show if you want camera time.
