What's wrong with an old fashioned low scoring defensive game? Those games are sometimes fun to watch because both teams are battling for every point. No easy baskets.

Those were some awfully good counter points TillNuts, lets review.

1) I'm wrong because I'm a Tar Heel fan
2) I'm wrong because I live in Kentucky

Both really good points. Get a good argument, saying Up Tempo basketball is nothing but Ghetto trash is truly the dumbest statement of the year. I even said I appreciated the style of play the Big 10 plays, but you apparently you can't comprehend that it is not the only style of good basketball.

The statement I made about inbreds was too show you ow stupid your initial post was, it was sarcasm genius. God forbid some inner city kids get recruited to play D1 basketball, we all know they are just ghetto trash anyway. You're a joke man.

Baskin -

Why even start a thread like this?  There is enough of this crappy, unimaginative, inaccurate reporting to begin with.  Hubert Davis is exhibit A.

At half the dipstick said that Michigan State had the best chance to go deep in the NCAA out of the Big10 teams.  The 4th place team, who lost to just about everyone away from the Breslin Center is Hubert's pick to go furthest.  Right.  Great job Hubert.  It's not like Wisconsin is 11-2 away from home this year.  Oh wait a second, they are 11-2 away from home.

He also made the blanket statement that Wisconsin has no offense and struggles to score 50.  Open your eyes moron.  Wisconsin has the #1 rated defense in the country holding opponents to 54.4 ppg.  If UW struggles to reach 50, then how do you explain the 27 victories?  54 > 50 you idiot.  Not to mention that UW's offensive efficiency is better than Memphis'.  Hubert Davis is a thief considering he gets paid to analyze college basketball yet offers no analysis.

Sounds kind of like a Duke Vitale analysis, ala:

Indiana should rename their University to RMKU

Good one, Dick. <barf>

Baskin -

I started this thread because the big ten is having a down year, and a lot of the problem is teams with inept offenses.  I love the way the Badgers play.  This was my first year coaching high school basketball, and I took a team that won 4 games last year, lost one marginal senior, and this year we won 17 games because we played lock down defense and used a variety of full court presses.  Defense wins games. Period.

My analysis: even though the Badgers won 27 games by playing great defense, they are going to run into some high powered offenses in the tournament that they will not be able to keep in the 50's.  That is when they are going to run into trouble.  I don't even know what they can do about that.  I like Bo Ryan and their system but I just don't think teams like that can make it far in the tournament.  The 2000 Badgers went to the final four because yes they played defense, but they had some good shooters (penny) and some guys that could flat out get up and down the floor (duany).

I'm a Badger and proud of it, class of 1991 BBA

the big ten is boring as crap to watch. And these type teams are going to have a lot of trouble when they hit a team that can just drain threes all day or that have great post play

You may not like to watch Big Ten basketball, but it's effective.  Ten NCAA titles agree with me.In an evolving game, when the last one was 10 years ago, they do not.

Badgers 2008 = Badgers 2000?

Hey Alaskan...even though they typically don't score much, I think it's probably because they don't have many possessions.  I don't remember what the threshold is for Bo Ryan teams, but I think he shoots for 1 point per possession.  This year, their points per possession are among the highest for a Badgers team in a long time (I think it's something like 1.09).

Against Marquette, they gave up 81 points by they scored 76.  So, they can score in an up-tempo game, but typically they keep the total possessions way down and therefore don't score that many points.  But they are reasonably efficient at scoring (probably not as much so as the high powered teams, but that's o.k.), if not great.

They do have guys that can score, although they didn't show it today.  They've scored 70 or more lots of times this year, so the scoring, while ugly at times, is there.  They are much better equipped for a run than last year and I think they'll be able to keep any team in the country under 80 points at this point in the season, and most likely under 70.  So, while they'll most certainly have to score more than 51 to win, I'm positive they can do it.  They are playing much better ball now than they were earlier this year, especially defensively.

As for the scorers compared to the Final Four run?  Well, those 2000 guys weren't all that great during the season at times, either.  They had LOTS of big droughts and I remember people wondering how they'd score in the tourney.  I seem to recall a certain 3 point shooter that got hot come tourney time (Bryant) and the Badgers have a fella who is capable of that this year (JBo).  In fact, many aspects of this year's team are uncannily like that one.  A lock down guard (Mike Kelly/Mike Flowers), a do it all forward (Mike Wilkinson/Krabs), and absolute lock down defense.  Questions about offense, but total unselfishness among the team and fairly distributed scoring.

The tournament is all about getting hot at the right time and the Badgers are as capable of getting hot as any other team (minus a handful that are above the rest).  But the defense is a constant that will allow them to win a couple games even if the offense struggles (another important aspect of making a run).  I feel very confident that this team is going to be right there in the tourney.  Maybe they won't make a Final Four run, but they could.

Good point, however Tubby slows the game down even more by calling every possible timeout in the last 2:00 of each half.  It makes some of the games very, very long.

Big Ten Country feeds the rest of the nation with plenty of talent.

The problem with University of Michigan basketball is that they can't keep their talented kids from leaving the state for "greener pastures".   Crisler  arena and the practice facilities are old and outdated, not to mention that football and hockey are much bigger at UM than basketball.

2006-2007 National Champs led by Al Horford of Grand Ledge MI
defeated Big Ten team for the Championship in 07.

2005 National Champs led by Sean May Bloomington, IN.
defeated a Big Ten team for the Championship in 05, two big ten team in the final four

Michigan St. three final fours and a NC since 2000.

I would say the Big Ten and the area is plenty healthy with good Basketball players.

The sota/indiana game was one of the best I've seen in a while even with a few boneheaded plays (how the hell can you foul three times in the final 4 seconds and still win?)

I need to amend my last comment on  this post. I'm not really sure why I watched the Illinois v Purdue but I'm glad I did. That was a great game. The Gopher game was even better. The Big Ten is still boring but the conference can still put on a show sometimes.
