I have been reading a lot of threads and posts the last week or so from Rays and Sox fans, going back and forth.  The one thing that seems to be said the most is the amount of games the Rays are up.  Boston fans are saying 3 games is nothing, its only July etc etc.  Rays fans are saying its 3 games now but they have a cake schedule in July so its going to get bigger.  (They do have a cake schedule...18 games against the last place Blue Jays, Indians, and 4th place Royals)

But I noticed something when looking at the standings I have not seen mentioned yet.  The Rays have played 4 less games than the Red Sox, yet have one more win than Boston.  This means, that from now until the end of the season, those 4 extra games are "freebies" for the Rays.  If Boston took a break and Tampa played those 4 games and lost every one of them, they would still lead the division.  Given their record, I think its safe to assume they could go at least 2-2 if not 3-1 in those "extra" games which would translate to an extra 1 to 1.5 game difference on their division lead.  So going into the all-star break, take their lead and add 1.  That could play a huge role down the stretch.

Well, yes, the Sox are 4 losses behind, but as the 'dog days' of the season come upon us in August, and the Rays have to play those 4 games before the end of the season, I am guessing that the Sox will have extra days off when the Rays do not.  The four extra Sox losses are definitely 'ball in hand' for the Rays, but the benefit of a day's rest can not be discounted later in the season.

And as a Sox fan who learned the hard way in previous years that games against the old Devil Rays weren't the slam-dunks, I am sure your Rays are looking at every game just one at a time....

I actually am having a ball seeing the Rays on top...  I always said that the Rays were much better than their W-L record showed in the past (Heck, they play in the AL East, the MLB "Black-n-Blue League", they have ALWAYS been better than most of the teams in baseball!)

Enjoy the season....  baseball season is the best.

While you guys are doing the math, factor in that the Rays still have to play 10 more road games than the Sox do during that period. They also have six more head to head match-ups. Three of which are in Boston, where the Rays are yet to win this year. This race is far from over. In fact, the best part of the season is yet to begin. And I wouldn't turn your back on the Yankees if I was you either. They're down, but they ain't out yet.
