I am consistently hearing, by the players and the media (in San Diego only) that the Padres are within earshot of a pennant race. Please please please, Sandy Alderson and Kevin Towers, step back in to reality. There is a lot to look forward to next year with a couple of moves. Fooling yourselves into holding out on deals that will bring young talent would be the worst thing the Padres could do.

There is nothing wrong with building for 2009, its not throwing in the towell, just retooling. And with the Padres one win in eight games the other night it automatically means the PAdres are turning things around? I'm not really trying to be pessimistic but more people need to think realistically, maybe the 5 hit shutout last night did that.

The Padres have not had a winning month yet this year, what makes them think they will magically turn into a playoff baseball club? Even Colorado, who had the best September in the history of the universe wasn't this far under .500 last year at this time. Lets make some moves already!!!

Anyways I'm done venting...

We've played 9 series against teams over .500 and haven't won any of them.

At the halfway mark our winingest pitcher is a reliver. Bell - 6

We should build for the future..

Still you can't fault people for not giving up. Bochy wouldn't

Well, I'm not giving up...There is still a chance things could turn around. Funny how Boch is now managing a team that actually IS in contention?

However, my expectations are certainly diminished. I thought back in April they would contend all season. So far they have shown that the pitching is way less effective than last year and the hitting is the same or a tad less.

The results are horrible.

To quote a Rockies poster on their page a couple of days ago...

This team is as worthless as a poop flavored lollipop.

LOL Bolt47! That lollipop line is priceless.

The problems with the Padres are multifaceted and it seems the dam is springing leaks everywhere... starting pitching, middle relief, closer, hitting, defense... you name it. With so many problems, it seems that each night about 4-5 of the categories are bad and we just don't have the margin of safety of teams like the Yankees where a bat or 2 can cover up for lots of weaknesses.

It just seems we're not getting any better. I thought we were for the period when Peavy was out and we strung some wins together, but then we went in the tank again. There is no consistency and fire with this year's club.

Blow it up and build for next year!

Fellow boltnut,

Correcto on everything EXCEPT  the defense. I think the last time I heard Mud or Mark comment on it, our Padres were among the better teams defensively.

Unfortunately 1 outta "everything else" isn't getting IT done eh?

Yeah, when I saw that line on the Rockies page I almost self-combusted with the LOL's

I visit there frome time to time. (respectfully) Misery loves company I guess.

Just b/c they don't make a lot of errors does not really mean they are a great defensive team.  I would say they are about average overall....The outfield defense is pretty bad overall (PMAC looks like Klesko Jr out there), and the only Catcher that looks decent behind the plate is L Carlen....Jerry Coleman could probably still play defense and not make errors b/c he would not get to any balls unless they were right at him.

The starting pitching is pulling its weight in 2008.
The starters are:

2nd in the N.L. in WHIP
2nd in the N.L. in quality starts

The offense is 15th out of 16th in the N.L. in:
OBP
OPS
and now last in the the key stat: Runs produced.

The bullpen is:

1st in the N.L. in losses with 18...sad
15th in BAA at .263
16th in save % at 43% (this is not all on Trevor this is a team BP problem)

Last year our offens
