I find Cougars to be a much tougher opponent for Bruins than Vols.

BYU was a much better team in the Las Vegas Bowl compared to their game at the Rose Bowl in September.    Max Hall and Austin Collie had big games but once again BYU could not rush the ball (34 yards)  and in the end the Cougs had to block a chip shot field goal to win.  As we all know the Bruins played in Las Vegas with their 4th string QB.   So why did the Cougs who were a better team in December fail to beat up on a .500 Bruins?    A few posts back I talked about the Tennessee team speed and team speed is somthing BYU lacks.  I'm not syaing that they are slow "white boys", BYU is a very good football team, well coached and well disciplined but they don't get the same type of athelete that the SEC and some Pac Ten teams get.  The Cougs will need to win@ Washington and beat UCLA at home for the BCS voters to give them any love this year.

BYU has the same team returning this year, are ranked in the top fifteen.   They should be favored at home but I doubt that the Cougs will be a "Tougher" opponent than Tennessee.

You are right about the MWC. But I would not call it just a victory over a MWC team. BYU is starting the season ranked in the top 25 and beating a ranked team, specially on the road, is always a booster. Bruinsīseason last year pretty much came to an end after that loss in Salt Lake to Utah. And if BYU beats Washington in Seattle they will get in the spotlight.

My whole point here is BYU will turn out to be a much tougher opponent to beat than Tennessee.

AlwaysMrG is so right in regard to the potency of athletes from the BCS conferences. THE POINT: UCLA means to BYU a level of interest and focus Bruins will not grant in return. The have a big winning streak but the winning streak at home is much bigger. Vols, on the 0ther side, are the season opener; You know; That game in the season where unpredictable outcomes and upsets happen.

Assuming this early pre-season Top 25 ranking stays the same in September, BYU is ranked #12 and Tennessee is at #21. At any time you're playing against ranked opponent at their backyard, it will always be tough game. However, winning against ranked non BCS team will only get ho-hum respond from pollsters or sport writers.

Take a look at Georgia who convincingly beat 10th ranked and undefeated Hawaii in Sugar Bowl. And yet USC passed them in one of the final poll instead of unanimously ranked Georgia at #2.

Not to disrespect to BYU but if they beat us,  they probably will hold the nation longest winning streaks until 2010 season.

BYU Cougars take losses in non-conference road games. They hardly, if ever, get beaten vs another Mountain west opponent. If Cougars beat Bruins in Provo, They will be reclaiming a bid for the national championship and QB Max Hall will become a top contender for Heisman as early as September. Of course Bruins have much more ground to win from the Vols game but beating BYU on the road is as tough as winning over LSU at baton Rouge.

SAY WHAT??

O'my, you've obviously never traveled to a SEC venue.   I  have never visited LSU but I have followed the Bruins to Knoxville TN in 85 , Athens GA  in 83 and made the trip to Provo back in 95.  BYU has great fan support but there is no comparison to the passion of the football fans at other two SEC venues.   Most announcers will tell you that there are few places that compare to a night game at Baton Rouge.  I would say that Oregon is a much tougher venue than Provo.  Oregons fans are without doubt the most obnoxious of any venue I have  ever visited.
