I dont think Dan Morgan was a waste of time. He was a player who if he worked out would've been great but if he didn't then it wouldn't hurt us. I still glad we didn't go after Keith Rivers (DT & CB were more pressing needs) and by the time we were able to pick again in the 5th there wasn't a better LB prospect that was more intriguing than DT DeMario Pressley or OG Carl Nicks. I hope we go after Thurman and tell him that he has a very good chance to earn a starting spot. The man has stayed out of trouble for the last two years and I think he  has earned another chance. Our 1st pick next year is going on a OLB.

So you don't think it was a waste of time for us to sign him only to have him retire 2 months later??  What did we gain by having him on our team?

The same thing that we gain every time we sign someone who doesn't make the team. It is competition. He didn't get on the field will probably be your next comment, warejs99. I bet you that Shanle worked a little harder in the weightroom, though. He probably studied his assignments more too. Bottom line, he didn't cost us anything. We don't have a salary cap hit to worry about. I understand what he meant by it wasn't a waste of time. It didn't turn out like we hoped, but I certainly wasn't banking on Morgan, were you? Vilma is a different story.........WAY DIFFERENT STORY!

Because we signed someone that hasn't been able to play more than 2 or 3 games a year??  I understand signing a player for competition but i never felt that Morgan was that player.  Its a proven fact that each concussion a person has increases the likely hood of having more.  See Trent Green, Zach Thomas, Steve Young, etc.....  IMO we would have been better served signing an unknown player with potential than an established player who can't stay healthy.

Bottom line, it didn't hurt us to give him a shot. I don't think Payton, Loomis, or anyone else was banking on him to be the WLB starter. If they did, he would have received guarantees which he didn't. He was a very good linebacker and if he would have been healthy, he could have helped the team. I know alot of people on the board had already penciled him in as a starter, but I was never that dillussional. Shanle looked good in 2006 and he wasn't awful in 2007. He was average. If he remains the starter, he will be better this year because of the talent added to the defense. I know the severity of concussions, but I would have signed Zach Thomas despite the concussions, wouldn't you? The contract just needs to reflect the risk/reward.

I agree it didn't hurt us...all i was trying to say was that it didn't help us either!  As for Thomas, i think he will be a good leader and help with competition but i think his productive days on the field are over.  I just fill we would be better served signing young players that we can invest our future in than picking up someone to be a 1 or maybe 2 year 'stopgap".  I agree that we needs vets for leadership but i think we have that now with players like Patten, Hollis, Mackenzie, Brees, etc...
