Troubled linebacker Odell Thurman was released by the Cincinnati Bengals on Monday, one month after he was reinstated by the NFL from a two-year suspension.
Thurman failed to attend the team's voluntary workouts last week, when he was in Georgia following the death of his grandmother, who raised him. The Bengals are installing a new defense and wanted him to participate.
"I was told by coach (Marvin) Lewis that he hadn't been in the building enough since his reinstatement, and they decided to go in a different direction," agent Safarrah Lawson said in a phone interview. My

In his defense that is just wrong if that is the reason they finally cut him if any of our grandmoters died I know we would be at the funeral and you would think teams would be a little more sympathetic to that.
On another note I hop we stay away from him ocming off a 2 year suspension he will definately be rusty but at least he seems to have been keeping out of trouble otherwise he wouldnt have been reinstated. He needs to go somewhere its not very easy to get trouble.

That was my question, do we take a look at him or do we pass. Thurman, a second-round pick from Georgia, showed promise as a rookie in 2005, when he led the team in tackles and led all NFL rookies with five interceptions. He was suspended for the first four games of the 2006 season after failing to show up for a drug test. The punishment was extended to a full season when he was later arrested for drunken driving. Thurman had been working out at Paul Brown Stadium, but went to Georgia for the funeral. He was expected back last week for workouts, but remained in Georgia taking care of matters involving his grandmother.

Some reports have Bengal officals confirming that they did indeed cut Thurman because he was not at the OTA's. This is a clear violationi of the Collective Bargaining Agreement. He should pursue this matter, however the flip side of it will be that he will have to play once again for the Bengals. The article also stats that his best option would be to just move on and let some other team pick him up.
I know he was in trouble and all, but I really think that him being in Cincinatti wasn't a strong enough locker room like we have down here. I'm on the fence about this guy though. Maybe if we signed him to a low risk high reward kind of deal then maybe yeah, but other than that I just can't see it. He does have some talent though.

well, since Dan Morgan retired, the Saints really should consider Thurman.
I knew it was too good to be true.

Thurman is very young and impressionable; certainly being a Bengal around all the negative influences in that locker room certainly was a detriment to character but I personally feel that the Saints locker room could be a cure for this. I don't think a single Saint has had legal issues in the Sean Payton era and maybe if he came in he would be able to turn himself around.
Bygkev is exactly right in labeling him a low risk high reward player. He hasn't played in a while due to off the field issues. Morgan and Vilma were similar in regards to the lack of games they played recently. Unlike physical limitations, which in some (Dan Morgan) cases cannot be fixed, he still has all the physical tools he just needs some recovery time on his personality; being away from the game for 2 year could have already made a significant impact on that. I could see SP bringing him in and giving him a shot, if he still has character issues I would expect him to be sent back into the market. It all depends on whether or not SP feels this locker room is strong enough for Odell to find his element here in New Orleans.
He would cost a small amount to bring in and only has upside. If his issues follow him here then he is gone, simply put. I say give him a shot. At least we know he has the physical tools to play the game.

One posistive to thing to look at with Thurman is since his 2 year suspension he has stayed out of trouble otherwise Godell would not have reinstated him.
Thurman is very young and impressionable
I think this statement rings very true with the Saints he would finally have some good role models and should stay clean.( just keep him off Bourbon Street) I think we should bring him in and if he seems to be remoseful for his past action sign him and add some clauses to his contract.

His troubles to me, seem very small in comparison to the troubles of the recent NFL Criminal minds.
The guy didn't show up for a drug test..(he was probably dirty) and he got a DUI. I will personally quit my job and drive him around at night if he wants to have a cocktail on bourbon street.
This guys a player and he's young. I hope we jump on this kid before he's gone to the Cowboys or somebody else that I hate. I wouldn't be surprised to see the Falcons in the mix here too.
Go get him Loomis & SP!
Geaux Saints!

You spoke too soon SaviorSaints, after the bombshell about Charles Grant, we may have a little problem with the NFL'S new policy. But I think taking a look at Odell Thurman couldn't hurt, he young and athletic enough to help, is he can keep his head on straight. What seems to happen with these kids, is that they go back and hang around their buddies, and get into trouble. During the season it seems like everybody can keep their nose clean.
